Voordat het leven bestond op aarde was er alleen maar materie, anorganisch dood "spul". Hoe onwaarschijnlijk is het dat het leven is ontstaan? En zou het gebruik kunnen maken van een ander soort chemie? Met behulp van een elegante definitie van het leven (alles wat zich kan ontwikkelen) houdt chemicus Lee Cronin zich bezig met deze vraag door te proberen een volledig anorganische cel te creëren met behulp van een "Legodoos" van anorganische moleculen - geen koolstof - die kunnen assembleren, repliceren en concurreren.
