두뇌에 대한 탐험 과정에서 많은 과학자들은 각각의 뉴런의 활동을 기록하는 믿을 수 없는 놀라운 시도들을 해왔다. 게로 미센복은 그와는 반대로 초파리가 빛을 수용하는 방식을 재설계 하는 일련의 멋진 실험들을 통해서 특정 뉴런이 어떤 역할을 수행하는지 정확히 파악하기 위해 뉴런을 조작하는 시도를 하였다.
