La mère d'Hannah Brencher lui a toujours écrit des lettres. Ainsi, alors qu'elle subissait une dépression sévère juste après l'université, elle fit ce qui lui semblait le plus naturel: elle écrivit des lettres d'amour qu'elle dissémina pour que des inconnus les trouvent. Cette initiative est aujourd'hui un mouvement international, "The World Needs More Love Letters", qui envoie des lettres d'amour à tous ceux ayant besoin d'un coup de pouce.
