A travers l'histoire de l'Islam, le journalist Bobby Ghosh dis qu'il y a deux visions du djihad : l'une, intérieure, une lutte de soi pour devenir meilleur, l'autre, extérieure. Une petite minorité (et plus récemment Oussama ben Laden) s'est appropriée cette seconde conception, l'utilisant comme une excuse à la violence mondiale meurtrière dirigée contre "l'Ouest".
