Bevor Leben auf der Erde existierte, gab es nur Materie, anorganischen, toten "Stoff". Wie unwahrscheinlich ist es, dass Leben entstand? Und - könnte das Leben eine andere Art von Chemie verwenden? Der Chemiker Lee Cronin zieht eine elegante Definition des Begriffs Leben heran (alles, was sich evolutionär weiterentwickeln kann) und geht dieser Frage nach, indem er versucht, eine vollständig anorganische Zelle zu schaffen. Dabei benutzt er einen "Lego-Baukasten" anorganischer Moleküle - keinen Kohlenstoff -, die sich miteinander verbinden, sich replizieren und miteinander konkurrieren können.
