Als TED Senior Fellow Cesar Harada von den katastrophalen Folgen der BP-Ölpest im Golf von Mexiko im Jahr 2010 hörte, schmiss er seinen Traumjob und zog nach New Orleans, um eine effizientere Methode zu entwickeln, das Öl zu binden. Er entwarf ein höchst manövrierfähiges, flexibles Boot, das riesige Flächen schnell säubern kann. Aber anstatt daraus Profit zu machen, entschied er sich für eine offene Entwicklung.
