I'm passionate about
teaching and learning in higher education. I am also greatly intrigued by the possibilities for learning that are presented by emerging technologies.
An idea worth spreading
The Pedagogy of Things
In 1991, Marc Weiser predicted a time would come when computing would become ubiquitous and technologies would become a part of and disappear into the environment around us, that they would “weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they [were] indistinguishable from it.” This vision of the future is rapidly becoming our reality. Many devices in homes, automobiles, public spaces, and even clothing are now capable of collecting and sharing information via the Internet and mobile devices. It is believed that we are at a point where there are more “things” on the Internet than there are people. This "Internet of Things" is not only changing how we interact in the world, it also promises to impact the ways we teach and learn within it. In response to this new, thing-rich landscape, teachers and students are developing and engaging learning strategies that leverage the technologies omnipresent in their environment. This is the “pedagogy of things”.

My TED Story
My TED story began in late 2010. I began exploring the possibility of organizing TEDx events in Blacksburg and at Virginia Tech. Part of this exploration led to connecting with Bob Bradley who leads the organization of TEDxNashville and TEDxYouthGreaterNashville. Throughout 2011, Bob shared the joys and challenges of organizing TEDx events and shaped my planning and progress extensively. In November 2011, I traveled to Nashville to interview various TEDxNashville committee members and delivered a TEDx presentation entitled “Our New ‘Real’ World: Participatory Culture and the Pedagogy of Things” at the TEDxYouthGreaterNashville event. Learning firsthand what is required of organizing a TEDx event, as well as what is required of speakers at one of those events, enabled me to organize TEDxVirginiaTech, which took place on November 10, 2012. I have since accepted a new position at the University of Georgia where I am now working toward bringing TEDx to this campus.
