  • A comment on Talk: Paul Bloom: The origins of pleasure

Aug 27 2011: on a daily basis, things like my mom's cooking and a lousy constructed cupcake made by my nephew eventually taste better than dishes i buy from a restaurant. i'm the kind of person who thinks that sentimental/personal values escalate the pleasure of enjoying/having an item.

i'm glad that he mentioned 'empirical claim' on Pollock's case because when he talked about Cage's 4'33", i thought it's verging on subjective. the fact that he stressed the word 'silence' is exactly the point that Cage afraid the audience would miss. to quote Cage, "There’s no such thing as silence. What they thought was silence, because they didn’t know how to listen, was full of accidental sounds."

of course this adds up to an agreement with what Prof Bloom has to say because had one known or understand the story, the intricacy, the philosophy of the composition, one might appreciate it more. all in all, regardless of some examples that are subject to one's taste, i love this talk and i find it very engaging.
