  • A reply on Talk: Ron Gutman: The hidden power of smiling

Aug 31 2011: One thing I'm having trouble with about the fake vs. real smile test is that if you're feeling happy (maybe even enough to smile) when you induce the "fake" smile is it still fake? The whole time I was watching the talk, taking the test, and reading comments I was consciously inducing real smiles. Perhaps the first moment of my smile would have appeared fake, but if so, the joy of smiling quickly takes over. I got 15 out of 20 and most of the smiles I got wrong were fake smiles, but a couple of them seemed to be quite joyful "fakes." I think a smile can only be called fake if the person feels such a way that they wish not to smile, and make the conscious decision to.
