Community building and community engagement
Baking Red Velvet Cupcakes and taking underwater photographs. (not at the same time)
I was the co-chair and co-host of TEDxWaterloo this year. I was a part o the organizing team last year and loved the challenge of taking on the leadership of the event this year. Planning began in August of last year where I had a dream to grow the event in both size of the audience and breadth of speakers. TEDxWaterloo grew from just under 300 attendees in 2010 to almost 1000 attendees in 2011. We had speakers from Canada, the US and China present. With over 7000 livestream connections to our event, we felt confident that we had created something incredible in our community.
My favorite part of the day was a Skype video call on stage between my co-host, Matt Gorbet, and 3 people who were attending TED Active. We had a blogger local to Waterloo, one of our speakers from last year, and the co-host of TEDxToronto speaking live to our audience. It was a really neat experience for the three of them and the audience!
We have already gotten our license for TEDxWaterloo 2012 approved!
