I want to live in a world where giving back is the reason we are educating students.
Human rights, animal rights - equal rights. Educating people to make informed decisions. Allowing people access to information irrelevant of their backgrounds or foregrounds.
I would like to build a school where the everyday, normal procedural events are all based on social activism in one form or another. The students would come to school without uniform, but the clothes must not be new - they must be from an op shop and they understand why we need to decrease 'stuff'. The food consumed would cost less than two dollars a day or be from the school garden, grown organically in a community sense - rosters of families would tend the food sources each weekend. The technology used in class is run by solar panels on the roof and the staff and students are in a full form of democracy. The cleaners only use organic cleaning products and it is either paperless or recycled paper, everywhere; including the toilets, photocopiers, notes, everything. I want an example of how money can be made by not having to spend it and giving back is the reason we are educating the students.
Gifted and Talented Education, Science Education and changing those stereotypes.
Cartooning, drawing and painting - landscapes through to portraits.
I am right at the beginning. I teach kids, who have so many ideas worth spreading - but not the platform, or perhaps know of where the platform is. I work in a fabulous progressive school that encourages students to be creative, free thinkers - clear articulate humanistic people, with passion. I wanted to provide them with the opportunity to express their ideas, that is not only to their peers, but to the local community - and perhaps even the world. In comes TED. So we are at the very beginning of organising a TEDxYouthKew event that will be organised, coordinated, filmed, produced and marketed by the kids - for the TEDx community. Off to organise the team....the event is scheduled for August 10th.
