About Me

I'm a Holland, MI-dwelling father of two with thousands of miles on my bicycle. I graduated Alma College and have worked as a chef and a scholar prior to taking on entrepreneurial pursuits. You can call me Bill.

I work, consult, mentor and speak as an entrepreneur, strategist, design thinker, technophile and change agent. I help people take their big ideas from conception, through the most difficult phase - the beginning - and ultimately to viability.

Currently, I'm the co-founder of HUB Grand Rapids (www.hubgrandrapids.com) (a place for launching ideas for the world), principal at BHR Consulting, lead organizer for TEDxGrandRapids 2013 (www.tedxgrandrapids.org) and a professor/mentor in entrepreneurship and innovation with Grand Valley State University.

Prior, I worked as president of Pomegranate Studios, a business incubator that helped launch ArtPrize (www.artprize.org), where I was the founding executive director for two and a half years. While with Pomegranate, I also served as executive director of Momentum, a seed accelerator designed to support the growth of technology and design in Michigan.

My experience through it all is in leadership, vision/strategy, design, technology and social marketing.

You can read my full resume on LinkedIn if you're so inclined, but I think you get the gist: I work hard to make exciting things happen.

  • TEDCred score: +2925.00 TEDCred reflects your contribution to the TED community.

  • A comment on Talk: Elizabeth Gilbert: Your elusive creative genius

Feb 10 2009: This was one of my favorite talks from this year. Despite Elizabeth's disbelief in her own success, she apparently has an incredibly close relationship with her genius...
  • A comment on Talk: Benjamin Zander: The transformative power of classical music

Jun 27 2008: Favorite TED talk of all time! Not only was he incredibly inspirational and passionate (I would be happy to show 1/10 of that in my own life), he made one of my life's most memorable experiences possible: Singing "Ode to Joy" with Matt Groening and Amy Tan (which all seems to be missing from this video).
  • A comment on Theme: How the Mind Works

Apr 16 2007: This is one of my favorite themes at TED and where, I believe, some of the most bold questions/statements are posed. If these conversations only get us to question our most fundamentally held beliefs - do we really know what we think?, does God exist?, etc. - whether those beliefs are changed or not, we would all be better off for the experience. Watch them all!
