  Jan 16 2012: Great idea! But here is another design consideration: using the same LED to emit green and red light on the top of the box will not be very helpful for color blind people. So if ease of operation is really a concern here, better to use two phisically separate LEDs, with some kind of labels or pictograms next to them.
