A comment on Talk: Allan Savory: How to fight desertification and reverse climate change

Mar 18 2013: Thank you for your comment, Steven. I appreciate it and wholeheartedly agree that if we learn from our mistakes, perhaps we will not repeat them. In this case, however, I agree with R. Rueda's comment above, and am saddened by the euphemistic use of the word, "mistake." I believe that Mr. Savory's current scheme for solving desertification is yet another "mistake." Please check out Anthony Holmes's post above about Geoff Lawton and Bill Mollison's creatiions of functional ecosystems from deserts without the use of livestock and see what you think. Thank you again, Steven. (Somehow this posted twice, so I deleted my duplicate comment.)

Mar 16 2013: I wanted to share this, as well. I recently read, " Chasing Dr. Dolittle: Learning the Language of Animals," by researcher, Dr. Con Slobodchikoff. He has compiled the research to show the amount of language animals are using to communicate with each other. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Mar 16 2013: Thank you so much for your comment, R. Rueda. "Mistake" seems like such an odd word to use for displacing native people from their land and systematically shooting 40,000 elephants.

    Mar 15 2013: Dear Austin,
I apologize for removing my post below. I wasn't sure where to respond to your two responses. :) Thank you so much for your comments. I wholeheartedly believe in forgiveness. For me, this is not a matter of forgiveness. I feel alarmed by Allan Savory’s previous and current solutions for desertification. It seems to me that solutions could include restoring land back to the native nomadic people, and helping to restore native animal populations like the elephants, rather than bringing in methane producing non-native livestock.

And, thank you, Marc Bedner, for your comment!

    Mar 15 2013: Dear Job,
I wholeheartedly believe in giving someone a chance to atone for their sins. I would feel less suspicious if atonement included restoring the land back to the native nomadic people whom Allan Savory forcibly removed, and helping to protect and restore the elephant population, rather than bringing in methane producing non-native livestock.

    Mar 15 2013: Dear Margriet,

Thank you so much for your message. I really appreciated receiving it. It looks like desertification solutions could include helping to protect and restore the native animal populations, rather than bringing in methane producing non-native livestock. I will check out Peter Andrews and his natural sequence farming.

    Mar 15 2013: Dear Arkady,

I have not heard of any sane scientific research that began with the slaughter of FORTY THOUSAND elephants. I wholeheartedly believe in forgiveness. I completely disagree with Allan Savory’s previous and current solutions for desertification. It seems to me that solutions could include restoring the land back to the native nomadic people whom Allan Savory removed, and helping to protect and restore the elephant population, rather than bringing in methane producing non-native livestock.
  • A reply on Conversation: How attached are you to your deeply held beliefs? If solutions to global problems challenge your worldview, how do you react?

    Mar 14 2013: Dear Christopher,

I am a vegetarian and would not be interested in reading books about livestock. Since you are a cattleman, I am pretty sure we would not agree about the environmental problems created by methane producing livestock, and in our ability to feed starving people around the planet, instead of livestock.

    Mar 14 2013: Dear Linda,

Thank you for your response. As a foster mom to orphaned baby elephants, I was saddened that Allan Savory had convinced the government to implement his plan on such an enormous scale. Systematically shooting 40,000 elephants to test a theory that proved to be incorrect is unconscionable.

It seems to me that desertification solutions could include restoring the land back to the native nomadic people whom Allan Savory forcibly removed, and helping to protect and restore the elephant population, rather than bringing in methane producing non-native livestock.
