Jul 6 2009: What's interesting is that Tomita came to mind, for both of us. I have all of Tomita's albums. If I'd recieved this as an untitled mp3, I'd have thought it an unheard Tomita piece. I've little doubt that this girl is as big a Tomita fan as we are. Imitation is, after all, the most sincere form of flattery. P.S. "Pictures at an Exhibition" is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have just over 750 vinyl albums in my collection.

Jul 6 2009: I love this performance. As a teen in the 1970s I used to listen to Isao Tomita. I'd imagine myself playing his stuff on a series of about a dozen keyboards, pre-programmed. Sort of like air-guitar fantasizing. Now here is this girl living my old fantasy. Remember in the 70s it took a roomful of cumbersome equipment to make this kind of sound.

Not to be contentious on my first TED post, but there's lots of music to listen to. I have a tendency to be hyper-critical of others efforts. While I try to contain that tendency, some folks deserve the criticism. Think Billy Ray Cyrus' "hit." But this Qi Zhang is not a pre-fab corporate put-on. Nor will her influence diminish nor eradicate the more traditional forms of music. My musical taste is very eclectic. I totally appreciate this piece for the niche performance that it is.
