    A comment on Conversation: Should student attendance be considered as a factor when performance reviews are undertaken on a teacher?

    Apr 5 2011: Having done many lectures and taught on and out of the formal Brazilian education system I think that the idea of reviewing the performance of the teacher on an attendance and tests (the grades should be used to review the teacher's performance as well as the student's).

    The tests should be used to review how much of the content the student memorized, but how much he has understood and is able to create/develop using it as knowledge base.

  • A comment on Conversation: The definition of an expert is flawed

    Mar 2 2011: I think that the experts that are mentioned represent a wide range of professionals. There are people who think that are experts (sometimes indeed are) on a field, but don't know how to handle it under uncertainty. These professionals are not experts per se, but highly trained professionals. I mean, real experts can infer things, understand better and deeper truths and act even under high uncertainty for they understand the root causes and not only see the effects. This is, in my opinion, the difference between highly trained professionals and experts. The first only act and react to situations they were trained to and the last are the ones that create solutions, understand the deeper meanings and may be able to make a difference.

    Feb 23 2011: I think mostly creativity, beauty appreciation and altruism.

  • A comment on Conversation: For startups, is it Ideas or Execution that matters most?

    Feb 23 2011: I think that both are important, but just a some great ideas might grow to a great business and well executed ideas may be simple but grow to great business most of the time. Of course we should exclude stupid ideas or ideas that are outdated.

    The Lean Startups movement/methodology show how to evolve the idea and the business model around it gradually. The steps are: you start with an idea that is not complete, build a prototype, discover customers, validate customers and build your company.

    So I am of the opinion that the execution is the most important, but the idea, of course is important also.

  • A comment on Conversation: What should I do if I see on the market a service online similar to the one I am about to launch?

    Feb 23 2011: I think you have a big opportunity on your hands. If you have people doing what you are doing it means that indeed there is a market and your idea is on the right track. You can learn from them, improve your product or you may join and improve both products.

    Unless you are talking about just a process or an algorithm, there is no reason to either patent the idea or go other markets just because there are others doing the same thing, there will always be someone doing something somewhat similar to what you are doing.
