A comment on Talk: Lisa Kristine: Photos that bear witness to modern slavery

Aug 12 2012: I worked in Bangladesh this year and I have seen the Ship Breaking yards where people work under the worst conditions one can imagine. Lisa Christine is right - the sad truth is that they don't know what a life in freedom is but this shows how severe and hidden this issue is. The isolation of the slaves from society makes the situation even more complicated.

It was one of the most moving talks in a while and very well done!

A comment on Conversation: Why do you use your voice in TED conversations?

Mar 4 2012: Definitely to get different views on interesting (and mostly complex) issues. I think that TED is one of the best things that happened to the internet and will make this a better world.
  • A reply on Conversation: What do you think will help our species survive in a space-limited world with a constantly growing population?

Mar 4 2012: Thank you Jack, very nice contribution. Yes you are right, 'constantly' might be the wrong word I have chosen. When we reached the 7 billion last year I had a look at the BBC website where one can find all kinds of info about our population and collected and projected data. The global population curve (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15391515) just seems to be so incredible. Even though I always had the strong opinion that humans can achieve everything (just as the evolution of other organisms that are forced to change) I started to rather worry if we have enough time to change, considering this fast growth.
  • A comment on Conversation: How can students be interested in studying more?

Mar 4 2012: I have to agree with Carl. If you study a subject that you are really interested in, you won't see studying as something difficult. But you are right, during my studies I sometimes wasn't that into reading the study books as well, even though I love the field I am in. But studying does not just mean learning from the given study books. Try to get the same knowledge through a different channel, like youtube or newspapers. For some people (me included) it is easier to grasp the info if presented in different ways instead of the same structure of chapters over and over.
  • A comment on Conversation: What is death for you?

Mar 4 2012: I think it is important to think about death from time to time as it helps to be aware of the finiteness of life. I always try to really do what I want in order not to regret when my time has come. Concerning the fear of death, I think it does not make any sense to fear it. How can you fear something you don't know? Sure, nobody wants to die in pain but the actual end of life is nothing to be afraid of.

I even think that death has a certain degree of excitement in it, as sad as it may be. There is nobody who could actually tell what happens after life, but we will all find out and we don't have to long for it to happen because we can be certain that it will happen sooner or later.
  • A comment on Conversation: Guys do you think it is possible to get energy out of typing on the keyboard?

Mar 4 2012: Great Idea! How about using the mouse for energy generation as well?
  • A comment on Conversation: What's Your Best of The Web?

Mar 4 2012: I think TED is one of the best things in the Web...
  • A comment on Conversation: Corporations, religious institutions, the military, sports teams, etc. also kill creativity. Education gets this focus because of our biases

Mar 4 2012: I do agree with you that there are several other institutions that kill creativity. However, I think that working on a change in education is a good start. What is a good employer worth that stimulates creativity in the workplace when the employees that are hired already gave up on their creativity due to their previous way of education? Ken Robinsons example of the little girl that is a dancer is a very good one: she became successful with what she was doing because her talent was discovered already during her school time.

Education is a very difficult field for the educational ministries and teachers (my mother is a teacher and both my grandmothers were, too). Still, I think that education must adapt to the external changes more than ever during these times. I don't perceive Mr. Robinson only blaming the educational sector, but in my opinion he is right with the point that education is the field that needs the most attention as the whole foundation for creativity (and personal perception about the own abilities) is defined during that period.
  • A comment on Conversation: do you make lists? if you do, what purpose do they serve in your life? what story do they tell?

Mar 4 2012: I use a lot of lists in various fields of life, for grocery shopping, to-do-lists and for project management. It helps to remind things but I often catch myself recognizing that I actually didn't need the list at all. The simple creation of a list helps me already to remember and to categorize my thoughts.
  • A comment on Conversation: Which TED talk affected you the most ?

Mar 4 2012: Rory Stewart: Time to end the war in Afghanistan

definitely one of the best talks in my opinion!
