A comment on Talk: Lisa Bu: How books can open your mind

2 days ago: Books do wondrous things. But what I sometimes realize is that I can be so immersed in the fictional world that a lot of its wonders are internalized into confusion and detachment from the real world. Our engagement with books can only be healthy and enlightening when we can counterbalance it with the same enthusiasm for the wonders of real life beauty.

A comment on Talk: Daniel Suarez: The kill decision shouldn't belong to a robot

2 days ago: I have no sufficient knowledge of the technicalities of drones to argue against their effectiveness. My fear, however, is that the increasing use of these automated weapons will virtualize warfare, make it free from accountability and justice, and disconnect the humanity from the traumatic nature of wars, eventually depriving us of the very virtue that makes us human - empathy.

Wars may be inescapable, but they should never be sanitized into something like video games.

A comment on Talk: Rita Pierson: Every kid needs a champion

May 3 2013: Great spirit. It's amazing that a little smiley next to +2 can make so much difference compared to an empty -18. Yet, we forget these small habits of encouragements in the face of big words like "educational reform."

Also, I liked seeing Sir Ken Robinson in the crowd, nodding in agreement.
    Kudos to all educators. :)

A comment on Talk: Hyeonseo Lee: My escape from North Korea

Mar 25 2013: She is a truly inspiring figure. It's an entirely different experience to hear about the plight of North Korean refugees from the very person that overcame it. I felt heartaches every once in a while just from listening to her voice tremble and seeing her eyes get teary.

On a different note, stories like these make me question the effectiveness of economic sanctions that are put on North Korea and periodically intensified in times of aggression. These sanctions probably affect the most vulnerable, innocent civilians in North Korea in the most detrimental way..

A comment on Talk: Cameron Russell: Looks aren't everything. Believe me, I'm a model.

Feb 4 2013: Despite my own skeptical views on the beauty industry, I think this talk provides a perspective of an insider that is otherwise often ignored - probably because of the readily dismissive attitude people have of "clever" and "beautiful" people (as evidenced by many comments here on TED). What a double-edged sword - beauty!
  • A comment on Talk: Janine di Giovanni: What I saw in the war

Feb 4 2013: "My role [as a war correspondent] is to bring a voice to people who are voiceless [and] to shine a light in the darkest corners of the world.” - This is perhaps one of the most overrated sayings in the field of investigative journalism. But the excessive romanticism aside, her commitment to reporting of injustices in the most violent times is unbelievably courageous. Her dedication makes this cliche a refreshingly inspiring quote!

A comment on Talk: Jarrett J. Krosoczka: How a boy became an artist

Jan 10 2013: I just have one thing to say. I feel good.
  • A reply on Talk: Adam Davidson: What we learned from teetering on the fiscal cliff

A comment on Talk: Louie Schwartzberg: Nature. Beauty. Gratitude.

Dec 4 2012: Take a walk outside. Who cares about the grey weather? Be grateful for the day you have, the people around you, and the nature that embraces you. And stop being cranky.

This talk was a truly re-energizing break from a hectic exam period. I thank Mr. Schwartzberg for the opportunity rediscover gratitude.
