  • A comment on Conversation: If you woke up today and money ceased to exist, what is the first thing you would do? Why?

Jul 27 2011: As long as someone else has something I want, "money" will never cease to exist.

If a day does come when I have everything I want and there is nothing I would want from anyone else, I will be either dead or have attained nirvana :) I wont have any motivation to do anything after that..
To answer your question, what will I do? NOTHING !!
  • A comment on Conversation: Should we be concerned with companies owning our data?

Jun 24 2011: should we be concerned? ofcourse we should be. Companies have already started using personal data (like browsing patterns, possible interests etc) to form an information bubble around us. If they could use such non-confidential data to promote their agenda, what prevents them from using confidential data?

Do we really believe that there is no "BIG brother" watching? Are they watching us for security? NO !! They are ONLY interested in profits and they are watching us to ensure we don't disrupt their profits.

  • A comment on Conversation: Why does music "touch" us emotionally? It doesn't make sense.

Jun 24 2011: emotions are triggered by external stimuli. In this case its music, it does not necessarily always makes you happy. It can scare you, it can make you sad or make you happy. Various art forms like music, painting, dance etc strive to move us emotionally without the use of words.

Do you know that we communicate primarily via non-verbal communication and hence, these art forms have the ability to generate strong emotions because they use the most effective means of communication (non-verbal).

Hope this answers your question :)
  • A comment on Conversation: Origin of biological information

Jun 24 2011: Biology is not too different from chemistry. We can argue that replication, passing on of information starts at a very base level, atomic or even lower. Each atom, has a preferred state and it tries to maintain that state by modifying its environment or itself. How does it know what to do to stabilize itself? when you mix two chemicals, how do they know they need to react or not? Take this theory to a more complex set of chemicals, namely RNAs & DNAs. It is all a matter of trying to achieve the most stable state possible. The more complex the chemicals, the more complex the mechanisms.

A comment on Conversation: Get rid of currency

Jun 24 2011: I have read the arguments and counter arguments below. It appears to me, you are simply replacing one currency with other.
Currency by definition allows you to attribute a value to effort or commodity. You can replace dollars by vouchers, it will still be "money".
If you trace our history, you will realize that we moved from bartering "stuff" to "money" as it was the more logical method.

Money in any form is not the root of evil, the evil lies in how people use it. A laser can be used to perform surgery or to kill. It does not make the laser evil.
  • A comment on Conversation: project multiple movies in cinemas

    Jun 24 2011: Great thought !!

Now imagine this: You are watching an intense drama sitting next to someone watching a hilarious comedy and keeps laughing every other minute.

Economically, the theaters will not make money if only a few people were to watch a movie they have rented the rights for.

Solution: Buy a home theater system.
  • A comment on Conversation: Charging the battery of a wireless mouse by moving it... Is it possible?

    Jun 23 2011: http://volumatrixgroup.com/2011/06/23/forget-solar-power-human-power-is-the-future/

Here is what I was referring to when I stated that the concept exists. Hope this helps...
  • A comment on Conversation: Everyone worships something. Self, stuff, or supernatural. What's the motivation for someone to arrive at the doorstep of their "god"?

Jun 22 2011: "God" is a human concept. I bow to whoever created this concept. I am not sure if it was an individual or a group, whether it was intentional or accidental.
We are a highly complex, emotionally intelligent species. Consider for one moment a world where we all "know" that there is no power greater than our meager control over our surroundings. That truth would be psychologically devastating for a majority of our population.

The entire humanity in its current state is unable to ensure its own survival in the event of a minor cosmic event. At a time like this, its always reassuring to "know" there is a greater power looking out for us. I am sure the day we evolve to a level where we are more in control of our existence, we will not see the need for a "God".

Whether God exists or not, I will wait till I see him / her /it :)
  • A reply on Conversation: Do you think that the true is absolute or relative?

Jun 22 2011: I guess it boils down to "our" definition of truth. :)

To me, the objective wavelength is a fact, data, information. It cannot be true or false. It exists.

For discussion sake, I could state that the wavelength measured is also subjective and hence not absolute. It is subjective to the our space-time instance. At a different instance, the same colour may be produced by a different wavelength OR light may not have a wave-form at all.

The "facts" that we take as absolute truths as also measured / experienced relative to our physics.

If the question is "Is there an absolute scale of reference?", there probably is.

A comment on Conversation: Charging the battery of a wireless mouse by moving it... Is it possible?

Jun 21 2011: The concept exists, i.e generating electricity by movement. I guess Simon is referring the the link I have pasted below.

To answer your question, yes, it may be possible to generate a mouse that self charges, however, the amount of electricity produced will not be sufficient to charge a laptop. I guess the application would be to extend the battery life rather than replace it completely.

An excellent idea, i hope this does get implemented.
