Steve Keil: A manifesto for play, for Bulgaria and beyond
Thanks for your answer Steve, I really appreciate it. Please don’t be sad about the comments. Bulgarians are not negative people as it seems, the comments only show, that you don’t understand our values and culture yet. Why your talk is directed not to the Bulgarians but directed to Americans, everything should be great there? I wondered what is the motivation for you to come in Bulgaria if every rational educated person goes away from Bulgaria? I assume the same as SAP, Vmware, HP, … are coming for. Or you wanted to combine good life with business, because you know all stupid rules and laws in US very well? You are efficient in making money, we are efficient in spending money or in other words (play). Your culture is become millionaire before you die, our culture is live before we die. Don’t think Bulgaria is wrong because your values are different and so deeply programmed (low level) from media and culture in US. People who stay in Bulgaria like it and won’t let you change it, even if they complain. People who immigrate don’t like it and don’t even care if it changes. We keep our culture where we live and not geographically in Bulgaria. The syndrome in Bulgaria is corruption because of poverty and poverty because of corruption. There is firm system behind it, not only chaos and “babas”. So leave that crap science with the rat brains and the long surviving bears. The approach is to change the system politically from top to bottom. Instead of paying for TED talks, spend some effort or resource to influence a politician in order to make the first law in the history of Bulgaria which is for GOOD. This is only approach know how to change it from inside. It is only my opinion and it may be wrong, exactly as your opinion about Bulgaria in your talk may not be true. There are no general solutions and sometimes there are details which are much more complicated as you think. Don’t be sad if people don’t like how you think, they are different.

From outside, seems as a really good talk Steve. Reading cheap US best sellers like “how to …” won’t make you successful in bulgaria. Playing with your employees may make you think they provide better service but the real reason is, that you pay better than the babas. Bulgarian children played much more than the western children and believe me there is no statistical information about that. Furthermore you won’t understand the history, the drive and the babas psychology soon. As a result you are not able to change the culture with bottom to top approach. It’s a Fact!
