About Me

Brett is a story fanatic. He enjoys all shapes and sizes of storytelling (tall, short, skinny, and all colors of the rainbow). Recently publishing his first documentary film: il mondo in una spiaggia, he is working on several new projects. These projects range from his first narrative film to experiential transmedia events such as TEDxAsheville. Additionally, Brett teaches game design that addresses real world change.
Innovation and collaboration are natural for Brett when solving the large scale opportunities in the community. He works at the intersection between youth and elders, actors and audience, boards and consumers... right in the middle, where he has always been!

Discovery and Peace through Authentic Stories

An idea worth spreading

The Problem:
Too many business ideas get paralyzed in the process of development. For one reason or another the business plans are never released to the hands of people who can actually get it done!
Additionally, the turn around time for an idea must be on a quicker cycle to lift off.

Solution:
Master the process of compiling the business plan into something that is ready for a first review by an investor within a single day (more specifically within a 4 hour studio).

My TED Story

It started with my friend Dallas who used to live here in Asheville. He told me about Jill Bolte Taylor's talk on TED right after he set up my Mac with all kinds of cool bells and whistles. Dallas has since moved to Austin, TX but I continue to call him for technical insight and new ideas!!
After watching Jill's speech I searched and began the discovery of all the amazing ideas at TED.com

In the winter of 2009, Jennifer Saylor contacted me through Twitter to find out if I would help with the production of the first TEDxAsheville. It was a quick response because of my interest in TED and my commitment to contributing to productions that actually cause change in the world!!
One day, I would like to communicate my ideas worth sharing on a TED stage.

Mar 20 2012: There are game mechanics that will compel people to come back again and again. These must be involved.. I agree with Seth Preibatsh that the Game Layer will define this decade.

Mar 20 2012: Ziska: I love your perspective.
What is the application of People People People? It sounds like a strategy that is augmented by social network.
  • A reply on Conversation: How do we make Bureaucracy sexy?

Mar 20 2012: BRILLIANT Erik!! This is one of the simplest answers I have seen: so obvious and could radically change the our perspective.
  • A reply on Conversation: How do we make Bureaucracy sexy?

Mar 9 2012: Simple steps, like the ones Omar Ahmad defines, plus game dynamics and I can imagine a pretty awesome recipe for creating change deep in the bureaucracy.. but how?!
    With whom?
And for what change?! On some level I want political mavins to show up and guide the way.
  • A reply on Conversation: What idea is worth creating a disruption & what, who, where, how would you disrupt?

    Feb 9 2012: Agreed.
So WHAT idea is worth changing your self in order to make a reality?!

    I really want to know!!
  • A reply on Conversation: What idea is worth creating a disruption & what, who, where, how would you disrupt?

Feb 9 2012: Richard, I love the disruption in your post!! It is certainly a challenge to welcome discrimination as so much of the use of this term is about the first definition you presented.
I believe the word you are looking for is Distinction. There is great power in drawing distinctions, as in to define one thing separate and independent of another.

And you are correct, at the root of the word discriminate there is a pure and righteous perspective:
    >> 1620s, from L. discriminatus, pp. of discriminare "to divide, separate," from discrimen (gen. discriminis) "interval, distinction, difference," derived noun from discernere.

However, it is not enough to simply point to the root of a word when culture surrounds and filters the meaning in our perspectives. I would advise adopting a word that is not discriminated against (:-) OR invent a new word while drawing a distinction to the word in question (i.e. you would more likely reach an audience by using a term like discrimen than discriminate... simply because one has the filters clouding the view).

    LOVE the challenge in perspective!!

Feb 9 2012: Manue, thank you for the insight.. are you saying that "settling" would be a disruption for you? And it is how you would create change in your own life?
If so, I can totally relate!! I too traveled all over from city to city, country to country and found that when I finally settled in Western North Carolina, USA, I was surprised by the amount of discomfort I felt, and still feel today just by being still, in one place!!
  • A comment on Talk: Charlie Todd: The shared experience of absurdity

Feb 5 2012: This talk is SUCH a treat!! Everytime I see it, the wheels start turning on new ideas and I am inspired!
My friends will more frequently cheer me by saying "Be disruptive!!" rather than "Good luck." Because they know the disruption creates a MUCH more powerful effect than my luck EVER has!!
What do you do to create disruption? And for what purpose do you disrupt?
  • A comment on Talk: Katherine Fulton: You are the future of philanthropy

Oct 7 2011: We reviewed this talk last night at the TEDxAshevilleSalon!! It was an awesome discussion and I remember the comment about how our "Greed Economy" is ending. People are becoming more engaged through technology and the many efforts to improve our standards of living.
I love the concept of Moral Hunger.. It is accurately descriptive to my experience. And I would like to learn more about the Islamic notion where there is no Interest. Does anyone have references to this custom?
