I am currently a high school biology teacher at The Hotchkiss School. Currently I am starting my ornithological research at the school getting students involved in bird research on our campus. I was born in Ecuador to Chilean parents. At age eleven I was lucky enough to go to the Galapagos Islands. Although I was not expecting this trip to change my life, a week later I had fallen in love with the islands and the amazing wildlife I found there. I wanted to be an ornithologist even though I was not sure what that meant. I returned to the Galapagos Islands to conduct research for my master's thesis. I studied the diversity and abundance of bird populations close to the urban areas and the undisturbed areas of the Galapagos. After spending two years living and working in Hawaii as the Avian Disease Coordinator focusing on avian influenza and West Nile virus, I took a year to travel the world. England, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain Guyana, Malawi, Zambia, South Africa, India, and a few more stops along the way on my year of travel. After so much travel my friends convinced me that I should try teaching again and I have found a great place to teach and live. I miss traveling so any school breaks I am on a plane to visit new places!

An idea worth spreading
Humans are part of part of the environment.
Our conservation efforts will continue to fail unless we include humans as part of the environment we are trying to protect. Education and Awareness is a much more effective tool for conservation than trying to fence people away from protected habitats. We need to foster a long term appreciation for biodiversity to promote conservation.

My TED story
I was introduced to TED in 2008 with Jane Goodall's talk and was hooked. I was lucky enought to be a TED Fellow at Long Beach in 2009. And then went to TED India marking the beginning of my six month sabbatical.
