My life has changed dramatically in the past five years. I no longer live in the same country, speak the same language or live with the same people. My aunt applied for an immigrant visa to the USA in 1993, and we moved from Bangladesh on August 19, 2005. I waited almost twelve years for the opportunity. We moved here because the United States offers the best opportunities for education, and there aren’t many opportunities available in Bangladesh. While I was still very young, I learned of the dream my parents had for my success. They did everything in their ability to help me gain the best education available. They told me about their life and the struggles they had in Bangladesh. They always have high expectations for me and wanted to see me become a successful person. Life in Bangladesh is difficult because people have to pay a lot for everything. If a person doesn’t have the money, they cannot obtain a good education, whereas in the United States everyone has equal opportunity to receive an excellent education no matter what race, religion, or the social ladder they may belong to. And I came to the U.S. to take advantage of these opportunities. When I started high school on August 21, 2005, learning English was challenging. Adapting to a new culture and lifestyle was the hardest part, but my work ethic and my strong determination enabled me to become one of the top students in my school. My family fully supports and encourages me to maintain challenging courses as well as being involved in extra-curricular activities. I enjoy learning in all sorts of ways, and I feel lucky to have these experiences.
Bangladesh's notoriety as a poor nation is well-deserved. For example, I have experienced living in squalor, without electricity or running water. Having no electricity makes learning difficult when trying to read or write at night, thus making it harder to succeed in school. Advancement from rural poverty is extremely difficult given these conditions. In the future, I would like to visit my country with my family and create a sufficient method to deliver electricity for the poor. Therefore, I look forward in to studying subjects that will help me in achieving this goal. A key aspect of my interest in science and engineering is that it further applies the theories, tools and concepts within these subjects in a practical context. I hope to accumulate more knowledge and developed my interests in these subjects during the course of obtaining a higher education so that I may help others.
