A reply on Talk: Jackson Katz: Violence against women—it's a men's issue

Jun 3 2013: What's scientific about sentence transformations? It would have been nice to see some statistics...statistics per country...perperators by gender...domestic abuse vs violent crime statistics per country to see if there's a correlation between ordinary violent crime and gender crime...some insight as to why very pro-active sexual equality countries like Sweden and Finland have some of the highest gender violence stats in Europe, contrasted with traditional, patriarcal countries like Japan with much lower gender violence stats, with an explanation.

Jun 3 2013: One of the latest child abuse cases in Spain was reported thus..."...a child was abused by its mother for a prolonged period...it is not known whether the woman was suffering from depression or mental illness. The pólice are investigating her partner to discover whether she was coerced into the abuse."

I was shocked at the report. Were it the other way around, excuses of depression, mental illness or coerción by a woman would NEVER be mentioned or even contemplated.

As for your point, when people say "What did she do to deserve that?" they do not mean that she deserved it or that it was justifiably provoked in some way. It means, My God, that's so terrible, I can't imagine anything that would provoke anybody inrto doing something that bad.

Jun 1 2013: Apparently, even taking that into account, the quantity of abuse by women still outweighs that of men. Surprised me.

Jun 1 2013: Exactly...which is why it's a misnomer when they talk about gender violence.

May 31 2013: I agree with you wholeheartedly Jim...violence should be rejected in all its forms and not just violence against women and children. I believe that this is where almost all western countries are going wrong right now in the struggle against abuse.

A reply on Talk: Jackson Katz: Violence against women—it's a men's issue

May 31 2013: I'm not saying that women should be demonized...I just asked why men are? How many cases are there of women flushing newborns down the toilet or throwing them in the bin or hiding them in cupboards? If a man did this, he would be called a monster...whereas with women extenuating circumstances are always taken into consideration....depression, fear, financial insecurity....people go looking for excuses for them. If this is the case, why are men's emotional states not taken into consideration?

You say I jump to the conclusión from the statistics that women are the most-pro-active abusers...I did not. But you did jump to the conclusión that men were, without statistics. I doubt very much that these stats are based on women forgetting to pick up their kids at school. I know for a fact that men and women are guilty of abuse...men are probably more likely to leave signs of violence. Women's violence is more psychological...but not only psychological. They do physically and sexually abuse children too. Except when presented to us on the news, there is a great difference in the language used.

In the most recent case in China, all it said was that a baby was found stuck in the pipes of a toilet...it's cries were heard and the the pólice were alerted. All in the passive. It didn't say that a woman flushed her newborn son down the toilet.

A reply on Talk: Jackson Katz: Violence against women—it's a men's issue

May 30 2013: Sorry..this was badly phrased. What I wanted to say was....It's true that you rarely hear of child abuse on the news from women, and when it does happen, men are often sought as coercers, instigators or collaborators. To find out just how many more men than women abuse children, I looked for statistics and got these from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

In short, WOMEN are responsible for the majority of child abuse cases in the US, and this pattern is repeated year after year. So why are men demonized?

According to US Government statistics, the majority of abuses against children are carried out by single women working alone.
