About Me

Social Media Canada is the brain child of veteran Internet Marketer, Jacquie McCarnan.

Jacquie has owned and operated several successful companies both online and off and is always on the cutting/bleeding edge of technology.

In the case of Social Media Management, Jacquie quickly realized that the Canadian market is grossly under-represented in Social Media.

Canadian companies are not providing the value that their American counterparts are and, in not doing so, are losing business to companies south of the 49th.

As a proud Canadian, Jacquie felt that this injustice needed to be rectified and set out to create one of Canada’s premiere Social Media Marketing and Strategic planning services.

Educating the Canadian market on the enormous benefits of a strategically planned Social Media Marketing Campaign is the purpose of socialmedia-canada.com. By providing value to visitors http://socialmedia-canada.com, Jacquie and her team are proving that anyone, from service providers to product sellers, to philanthropists can utilize Web 2.0 strategies to improve their brand online.

More About Me

I'm passionate about

I am passionate about showing people that Social Media is a wonderful way to make corporations responsible for the actions both on and offline.

An idea worth spreading

I believe that Social Media is the great equalizer. It allows the everyday citizen a direct say in the quality of the products they use and the companies they do business with. It allows them to choose companies that share their own core values. By using the principles of social science to determine what constitutes a successful life, we can all work together, through Social Media to create a society that no longer blindly follows the money but, rather, seeks to improve lives with eyes wide open. To provide something of value to someone without expecting something in return is the definition of fulfilment for the human race and the more we're able to get that message across the more likely we are to become a better society.

Talk to me about

The environment, philanthropy, socially conscious initiatives, businesses who believe in karmic capitalism. Tell me how you provide value to those around you and the rewards you get from that.

People don't know that I'm good at

Parenting. I'm raising 2 citizens of the world and I take that role more seriously than any other thing I do.

My TED Story

I love TED. When I suddenly found myself unemployed in Jan '09 I was at a loss. Newly divorced, unemployed and with 2 kids to raise I needed to do something but did not know where to begin. I found TED.com and started watching videos every morning. The stories I heard were engaging. TED provided me with enormous value and asked nothing of me in return. I have always kept that core philosophy as part of my business model. I only work with companies that contribute to the betterment of our society be it through environmental initiatives, socially conscious action, philanthropic endevours, or karmic capitalism. I learned, from TED, that taking action for someone else brings it own, infinitely more satisfying, reward than looking out for #1. Thanks TED for showing me how to be...well, better!

Apr 27 2011: Thanks so much for your comment Debra. I'm hoping that regular consumers can use SM to work things the other direction. i.e. Can we get Canadian coffee giant, Tim Horton's, to stop using paper cups or, at least, start offering people the opportunity to recycle those cups?
Or, can we use social media and viral marketing to insist that corporations who tout their social responsibility actually do it?
I'm a bit of an idealist, I realize, but I really hope to see change initiated by the consumer.

Apr 26 2011: I like undefinable. It's not a copout. You just have to give it a chance. Besides, what's the alternative? Definable? yuck! :)

Apr 26 2011: I'm gonna go with FULFILLED. I know it's kind of boring but I do feel that I live a fulfilled life. That's not to say that there isn't more to do or that I can't be better but learning to live in the now and loving it has brought with it the most fantastic feeling of freedom. (wow, that sounds rather hippy dippy ;)
Thanks for this Lee. It's fun! (this is my first TED convo!)
