  • A reply on Conversation: How does the presenter impact the reaction to a talk? So how might people's reactions to my talk be different if I was retired military?

Apr 30 2011: I think that people have a natural desire to hold to something as true, and as you say Ian, when we have these truth views/ideologies as a way of connecting to a group, we feel more convinced of them.
It is probably up for debate whether or not is is possible to have the kind of fundamentalist truth view / ideology that is actually consistent with a kind of ultimate truth. Regardless of the status of the answer to this question, I hold that even if people do have the 'right' ideology, if they are closed to ideas that do not support it, their rightness is pale at best. You loose the depth that truth has to offer when you make it black and white.

A comment on Conversation: Risks are important. But how do you decide which ones are worth taking and when to be more calculative.

Apr 30 2011: Taking risks has to do with the flavour of a persons approach to life. If a risk is defined as a choice that implies an unknowing outcome, then one could view every single choice we make as a risk, once we realize that control really only a figment of our imagination. We might feel like we're in control on a good day, but probably we only think this to keep ourselves sane :)
The risk taker acknowledges our frailty and is free to be outrageous within it.
