About Me

I am a young and driven individual who loves a challenge. One thing I love doing is meeting new people and hearing their stories and opinions. I find other walks of life so interesting. I have always had a fascination with business and in particular marketing. I find the factors that influence buying behaviour very interesting. I believe the world now needs an element of philanthropic capitalism to bring change to our world but in a manner that keeps developing the world. I studied Business at Belfast Metropolitan College from the age of 16 and I am now completing a degree in Marketing here. I have plans to maybe complete and internship this summer then spend a bit of time travelling to help decide upon my future and where I would like it to go. I have a long standing record within retail having managed and supervised men's clothing stores. I have a strong leadership streak within me and find this role a comfortable one.

  • A reply on Conversation: What are the opinions on the view of moving away from lecturing to facilitating shared learning in a more creative environment?

May 27 2011: This is great, sums things up excellently . Being humble is a key point as an egotised person can sometimes find it hard to take on new ideas I think part of the problem Meher below was getting at. In the correct environment and managed correctly shared learning is very important and can build great ideas.

May 27 2011: Meher, I think that if it is done properly and facilitated correctly the shared learning experience can be controlled and delivered correctly, your opinion on people is narrow minded but I do know this type exists, but it needs to be facilitated correctly and it may have been the teachers fault it was not managed correctly. I in my time have taken part in many groups experiences and with the right motivation I believe everyone are eager overachievers.

May 15 2011: yeah that is exactly my thoughts. To further the idea... All students take part in critical thinking and then work in teams to develop each others ideas. this will build connections between them and root out any ideas that will not work. Critical thinking is a very important and somewhat overlooked skill and it something I always focus heavily on.

May 14 2011: I recently took part in a programme called fresh taken by a man called conann Fitzpatrick. The idea spawns from him.

    Nicholas.

My idea of a class. Lets say its a marketing class at degree level. To start imagine the topic being given lets say it was to discuss how services marketing is changing. Now the theory that will be taught is old and outdated authors such as Lovelock etc. Now although this is a good base for starting the studies how can it be as up to date as a video Seth Godin posted on an idea virus, or a journal document written by Pines and Gilmore (brilliant services marketing theorists)

So would it not be useful for each student to go away for a week and look at the taught theory i.e. Lovelock and use their own shared learning to see other views. New views and how this is incorporated in then come back and teach each other what they have found. The information available through websites like TED and social networks like twitter allows them to do this.

Within this context critical thought can be judged and graded through its relevance and in terms of marking it on a level of would it work and how have you justified that it would work.

    What do you think?

Thanks to Colin and Wendy for the input I will look at the drive book. what is the idea with the school Wendy?

  • A comment on Conversation: Would world become better if there were no Ego??? How to overcome "ego" ???

May 6 2011: Really interesting views and opinions. I think Ego can be a help and a hindrance at times in life. I think ego can be a help within life as it can contain self confidence. Your ego about what you do and who you are can give you the confidence to speak out and do what you think you do best. Of course it is up to people to listen to you and decide if they believe you are right.
Ego can be a hindrance when as Bob Van Oosterhout says self interest takes over. This is when ego can affect and contort to view of one self. The ego can lead a person to see only one view and in this view they can hurt other people or discount them very quickly due to only being interested in one self.

The ego is a question of managing one self and their ego. Without Ego would there be competition on a football pitch? Would their be Tesco and ASDA? Would there be competition among graduates applying for jobs?

My conclusion is that people can become to egotistical and this can lead them to self interest. But I believe there is a place for ego. Maybe not everyone has to have a big ego or maybe their ego focuses around doing "social good" but without an ego I think a lot of competition could disappear I think peoples drive to succeed may vanish and I think it would remove an element of diversity from our world.

Whats everyone elses views on my point of view?

A comment on Conversation: What defines a good leader?

Apr 1 2011: I think a book called The art of war will help define a leader for you.

A leader is someone who can be admired, who listens to people, who encourages people but can steer that encouragement in the correct direction.

A leader must have belief in what they are doing and en still this belief into everyone who follows.

A leader must be transparent and let everyone it leads know the aims of the leadership and know where the organisation is going.

A leader must lead my example and not by words.

A leader can have many different characteristics and a different mixture depending on what organisation they are leading and where they are leading it.
  • A comment on Conversation: Advertising.......is it still worth the money ?

Apr 1 2011: This is a very open ended question. Ads are all based on perception and state of mind. for example if you are hungry you are far more likely to see an ad that advertises a £5 meal deal. Where as if you are in a rush to a meeting you would pass by these adverts without diverting your attention.
Its all about placing the ads at the right time and in the right place to have the most impact. A business needs to ensure that they target their correct target market through their advertisements to help ensure that they are relevant and not an annoyance. A good example is TV. TV is a very costly form of advertising that in my opinion is losing momentum as a form of advertising. The target market when viewing TV is so broad and with so many channels it can be difficult in targeting the correct market.
Attention can be drawn to an advert my making it stand out. may this be the colours, sounds etc. But interest can only be developed if a consumer would use or would purchase the product that is being advertised.

So in short if a consumer is interested in a product or is conducting an information search on the product they will tend to notice the advert more (for the life of me I cant remember the term for this) So it is up to the advertiser to ensure they do it in the right way at the right time and in the right place.

    Hope this helps
