About Me

Ryan is an award-winning designer specializing in branding, web design and web development. He is currently working with several start-up and non-profit companies to develop front-end web design and smart brand strategies to further promote and enhance their web presence.

A recent graduate from San Diego State University with a B.A. in Communications Advertising, he discovered his passion for advertising and design while in high school. Spending much of his free time designing websites for family and friends, he furthered his design acumen by expanding his portfolio to include art and photography classes. Before the end of the quarter, his teacher asked him to assist by conducting special photography classes for his fellow students. He also won several art and photography awards, culminating with one photograph to be displayed in Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher's office.

While attending San Diego State University, he not only selected a major that would keep him on the pulse of design, but also participated in outside activities that gave him additional experience and breadth in this field. He was an active and proud member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity that received the highest campus GPA, Buchanan Cup, and the Standards of Excellence Silver Laurel Chapter-IFC Dean's Trophy.

As a member he participated in community service events such as MS Walk and the Surf Rider Foundation, and also became technology chair. His on-campus activities included election as Vice-President of the SDSU Ad Club and selection as an intern for the SDSU Entrepreneurial Management Center (EMC). Under the direct supervision of the EMC program director, he was noted as having a great understanding of branding and clean design.

A recent recipient of the March 2010 American Design Award, his online portfolio can be viewed at www.RyanLum.com and is featured on several CSS Design Gallery websites.

My TED Story

I remember watching my first TED talk and it was love at first sight. I was enthusiastic that I finally found a community of individuals who had a level head and wanted create a positive change in the world. From that point on, I've continued to watch TED talk only to think how I could apply the lessons to my life and create action. I took the next step and applied to TEDx and was accepted. My goal is to create something or share an idea worth spreading and hopefully be able to speak at a TED conference one of these years. The main goal is to create something using my current skill set that will help change the world for the better.

Mar 28 2012: Still love this song.

A comment on Talk: Vijay Kumar: Robots that fly ... and cooperate

Mar 7 2012: This kind of technology will undoubtedly change the world if used in the right application.
  • A comment on Talk: Back to the Start

Feb 29 2012: Really enjoyed this piece. Really glad they chose the animated medium to convey the message as well. Regardless of how true the process really is, it's a great ad and certainly one that is worth spreading. If anything, hopefully it encourages natural and organic products. Farm life is so unique and valuable. It's sad to see the profession becoming old-fashioned.
  • A comment on Talk: Jae Rhim Lee: My mushroom burial suit

Oct 19 2011: Love the concept. I love the idea of lot leaving a negative impact on the world after we die. Hope to see this and like concepts developed!

A comment on Talk: Nathan Myhrvold: Cooking as never seen before

Sep 17 2011: Definitely felt like he was marketing his book instead of actually sharing a new way of thinking about food.
  • A comment on Talk: David Byrne sings "(Nothing But) Flowers"

Jun 1 2011: I think this is wonderful and playful.

But does anyone else hate when an artist starts the crowd clap...then you're stuck in that awkward, "so when do I stop the clap" moment?
  • A reply on Conversation: Do you have a suggestion for TED? Something we could do better?

May 24 2011: I totally understand that and understood why it was on the bottom; however, then my UX sense kicks in and reminds me that it is more of a common practice to place the input field before the comments (discus comments, word press comments, etc). An argument could also be made that it currently discourages comments because a user doesn't know where they can comment. I think this conversations section does this very well and it is before comments. I'd be interested to compare how many peole comment via conversations than onthr video. Perhaps some a/b testing? I also think it should be consistent throughout the site. Either above or below the comments, not both.

Regardless, thank you Will for allowing us to input our suggestions! I love this site!
  • A comment on Conversation: What kind of power can a film have?

May 24 2011: When I saw this topic, I couldn't help but think of the movie, Avatar. A lot of people got depressed after seeing the movie because they realized it wasnt a reality and they could never experience that world. I think that is a prime example of what a good film can do.

A comment on Conversation: What will you do with your aging parents?

May 24 2011: I would do whatever they'd prefer. Knowing my parents, they wouldn't want to move in with me because they don't want to impose on my life. To be honest, I don't mind if they do. They mean the world to me and gave me life.

If they don't want to move in with me, I'd probably either move closer to my parents so that I'm only a phone call away or help pay to have them moved closer. I'd probably move closer to them as I know they cherish their home and location (as do I).

It's a very interesting question and I think you'll get very different answers. I think a lot of it is cultural.
  • A comment on Talk: Louie Schwartzberg: The hidden beauty of pollination

May 23 2011: This is an amazing and beautiful reminder of the smaller communities in the world. We often take a lot of this for granted because (and I too am a victim) we are too busy with our jobs and don't live in the moment. The message is clear, "Remember to stop and smell the flowers."

But more importantly, take action to ensure those flowers will always be there for us to smell.
