Frans de Waal: Moral behavior in animals
It is obvious that David Van Drunen and other religious people are still children in the fact they cannot accept that animals have empathy and compassion for one another without the influence of the wrath of an angry god keeping them in check. When really we among other animals had to evolve with the concept of communal living with cooperation and empathy in order to survive and progress. Although there are forms of consequence such as cause and affect they are not as prominent as a vengeful giant ghost man in the sky.

So because most people have a higher cognitive sense of intellect, and physical abilities they have a "soul". I have to ask, "What do you think of the severely mentally and physically disabled? Are they abominations of god?"

John Hodgman: Aliens, love -- where are they?
I think what he's trying to get across is that finding true love is a lot like an alien encounter in the respect that there is much we may be able to learn from it and that they are fleeting moments of opportunity. And much like aliens, love can easily be lost to the "universe" as John would put it.
