There are many ways how to motivate. It is usefull to discriminate between exteral an internal motivation. External motivation must be imposed with use of rewards or punishments, such as winning or loosing. Internal motivations stems from curiosity and s sense of meaning. If you wnat to motivate learners to cooperate, to give them something the are curious about and what is meaningfull to the them at the sametime might be a good idea.
