  • A comment on Talk: Bart Knols: Cheese, dogs and a pill to kill mosquitoes and end malaria

May 20 2012: I am very impress with your think outside the box idea! Yes I agree with you that the pill to kill malaria maybe only effective in isolated islands. It might not be possible in the Africa mainland because of the high rate of immigration and connectivity between mosquitoes colonies. Since mosquitoes have a fast life cycle generation, a new resistant strain of mosquitoes could be developed in a short time. I think besides of pills (which is interesting but difficult to distribute), we can focus on the ecology and health system. When the USSR health system breakdown, the cases of malaria spike exponentially in Russia even it is a temperate, continental climate. In fact, there are many mosquitoes in the Arctic circle. A complete and developed health system is very important. Tropical countries like Singapore is surrounded by countries which have cases of malaria but because of its developed quarantine and health system, there is not a single local infected case.

The reasons why malaria is so common in less developed countries is because of poor health system and disrupted ecosystem. Deforestation and excessive land use change in Africa disrupt the food chain and reduce the population of the natural predator of mosquitoes. And causing mosquitoes population out of control. We don't want to eliminate all mosquitoes but we want to keep it in an acceptable level where transmission rate is lowest. Overuse of pesticide has reduce spiders and amphibians & dragonfly naiad (eat especially mosquitoes larvae) population and indirectly cause spread of malaria (XJ Nelson, 2006). Restore the ecosystem and health system is the ultimate solution to make malaria history, break down the poverty-malaria vicious cycle.

Your talk is very inspiring and I can see your passion! I wish you can be my PhD supervisor. All the best!

A comment on Talk: Nathan Myhrvold: Could this laser zap malaria?

May 2 2011: I don't think using laser would be an effective solution to solve the malaria crisis we are having. First for example in Madagascar, not everyone has access to electricity, and think about the cost to maintain it. I think a ecological and holistic approach is what we are looking for. The healthcare system is the key to combat malaria. Malaria is not a tropical disease, during the collapse of healthcare system in the Soviet Union, many people is killed by malaria. A hygienic and clean environment is the key to prevent malaria. The countries adjacent to Singapore such as Malaysia and Indonesia has relative more cases of malaria but Singapore is free of malaria, this is because of their clean and hygienic environment and advanced medical care system.

Deforestation and natural habitat destruction in Central Africa has decrease the population of natural enemies of mosquito such as spider, frog etc. This is what cause a continuous outbreak of Malaria. Combine with global warming, mosquito can invade more place in high altitude affect more people.

Therefore I think a ecological and natural approach is the ultimate solution for malaria!

  • A comment on Talk: Richard Pyle dives the reef's Twilight Zone

Apr 28 2011: I think they should invent a system that warn the person who turn the wrong valve and automatically fix the problems. It is such a tragedy. I think human should put more effort investigating the ocean. Compare the space technology, the government only spend tiny amount of money in ocean research....
