  • A reply on Conversation: Is the internet, not formal education, the new great equalizer?

Oct 7 2011: The industrial model is not working all over the world. Thanks to the Millenium Development Goals, the UN has brought facilities, books, and training to regions that previously had nothing. Yes, in this situation, our model does work as inquiry is part of human nature. The internet however, provides unlimited resources to all with access. The statistics on cell phone subscriptions are staggering, bringing knowledge to nearly every community on earth. That is a model that REALLY works. Now if we can bring some form of organization to it all, we will have an amazing resource.

Oct 7 2011: Knowledge is no longer an immutable solid, it has been liquified. It is actively moving in all the currents of society itself. - John Dewey, The School and Society, 1900
  • A reply on Conversation: Another Groundshifting Opportunity - Can we make Education free?

    Jun 28 2011: Hi Nick,
The fundamental right is to have access to a QUALITY and free education.
  • A reply on Conversation: Is the generation in education getting less intelligent than the ones before them or smarter?

    Jun 28 2011: @Nick,
Inner city teachers are often told EXACTLY how to impart information via scripted lesson plans. No Child Left Behind and now Race to the Top made that adjustment. Inner city children distrust education because they see the obvious inequities when they leave the "hood" and witness that not all schools are created equal.

If you have time, read Savage Inequalities by Johnathan Kozol. My comments are based on lived experience as a child in low income districts and as an educator within the same.
  • A reply on Conversation: Is the generation in education getting less intelligent than the ones before them or smarter?

    Jun 28 2011: Hi Ben,
Minds are still brilliant, we've just used our primary socialization tool (public education) improperly. Good teachers have not been destroyed they've just gone underground.
  • A reply on Conversation: Is the generation in education getting less intelligent than the ones before them or smarter?

    Jun 28 2011: Hi Scott,
The tools in some communities have been broken for years, even decades (there is also a small population who has NEVER had access). Digital technology is making information fluid. Those of us who had little to no use of all those tools of antiquity are finally able to access information at a higher rate with the help of low cost technology.
  • A comment on Conversation: What book would you recommend to your fellow TEDsters?

Jun 28 2011: The Heart of Whitenss - Robert Jenson (less than 100 pages)
How We Think - John Dewey (less than 200 pages)
Pedagogy of the Oppressed - Paulo Freire
Everything on Mortimer J. Adler's list of Great Books (classics)

A reply on Talk: Emiliano Salinas: A civil response to violence

    Jun 28 2011: Hi Johnson,

I'll insert here that I've read the entire thread, and will continue to do so as I found the sermon structure of Salina's talk unconvincing too (prior to remembering anything about his family in politics). The discussion here is very interesting but, some of your comments and some of the responses they provoke are harmful to civil dialogue. See: http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_sandel_the_lost_art_of_democratic_debate.html
  • A comment on Conversation: How do we capture the collective wisdom and engage the global TEDx communities?

Apr 11 2011: Since joining TED this winter, I have watched about forty percent of the available talks for applicability to my work. As I have found true in ancient teachers, modern teacher contributions to humankind can also be summed up according to a small number of major ideas. Might we agree on Aristotle's concept of "logos"? Adler's 102 great ideas come to mind as a wonderful start. If we re-tag the existing talks via a set of dedicated volunteers/translators. Most of what has been mentioned here can be achieved with some facility.

ANGEL, ANIMAL, ARISTOCRACY, ART, ASTRONOMY AND COSMOLOGY, BEAUTY, BEING, CAUSE, CHANCE, CHANGE, CITIZEN, CONSTITUTION, COURAGE, CUSTOM AND CONVENTION, DEFINITION, DEMOCRACY, DESIRE, DIALECTIC, DUTY, EDUCATION, ELEMENT, EMOTION, EQUALITY, ETERNITY, EVOLUTION, EXPERIENCE, FAMILY, FATE, FORM, GOD, GOOD AND EVIL, GOVERNMENT, HABIT, HAPPINESS, HISTORY, HONOR, HYPOTHESIS, IDEA, IMMORTALITY, INDUCTION, INFINITY, JUDGMENT, JUSTICE, KNOWLEDGE, LABOR, LANGUAGE, LAW, LIBERTY, LIFE AND DEATH, LOGIC, LOVE, MAN, MATHEMATICS, MATTER, MECHANICS, MEDICINE, MEMORY AND IMAGINATION, METAPHYSICS, MIND, MONARCHY, NATURE, NECESSITY AND CONTINGENCY, OLIGARCHY, ONE AND MANY, OPINION, OPPOSITION, PHILOSOPHY, PHYSICS, PLEASURE AND PAIN, POETRY, PRINCIPLE, PROGRESS, PROPHECY, PRUDENCE, PUNISHMENT, QUALITY, QUANTITY, REASONING, RELATION, RELIGION, EVOLUTION, RHETORIC, SAME AND OTHER, SCIENCE, SENSE, SIGN AND SYMBOL, SIN, SLAVERY, SOUL, SPACE, STATE, TEMPERANCE, THEOLOGY, TIME, TRUTH, TYRANNY AND DESPOTISM, UNIVERSAL AND PARTICULAR, VIRTUE AND VICE, WAR AND PEACE, WEALTH, WILL, WISDOM, WORLD
