More About Me

I'm passionate about

Passing on the knowledge and skills i have been taught, to others and to continue to learn from them. All kinds of learning really, from business to basic human interactions to being open to all ideas

An idea worth spreading

Nothing new really...pay it foward, community vege gardens and just plain old be nice to someone are all on the go for a lot of people around the world...more of it though eh....what about if ya can only go 100kmh on a road passing a law to say that you can only drive a car that does this max? In New zealand we give our 15 year old kids a drivers licence, access to any level car they like and can legally buy alcohol at 18, wow but we continue to spend millions advertising that mixing these things together = fatalities on our roads....wow are we that stupid...hmmm yes. Power...now thats interesting eh...water, wind, sun, coal, oil...etc...same as the car issue really we need to find more and more ways of servicing the destruction of earth...hmmm lots of arguments for that one. I know a group of people who have invented a single arm wind turbine...idea is to have you own turbine for your own power...a good and noble idea thats worth spreading....make it out of solar panels and away we go

Talk to me about

ideas, innovation, art, photography, learning, leading....being lead by women...its actually empowering.

People don't know that I'm good at

sculpture and making things happen

Apr 8 2011: i do..living in new zealand we have this clean...green branding that we send out to the world...and on the whole yes we are, mainly due to the lack of population, i do wonder what our poluttion per person / cow is though. we are in need of a re-brand...freshen up...technology...people smarts..arts and sports is our greatest assets....our govt wants to mine minerals...energy resources etc...so maybe a rebranding is on the way?
  • A comment on Conversation: How will you take part in JR's TED Prize wish?

Apr 7 2011: i live in a small city (by world standards) in new zealand - we are a patriotic lot but a little disjointed with our city energy and community drive....thats not to say there isnt some great stuff going on and certainly a better feel than the last city i lived in. i was thinking about a project where by i used my own talent of taking pictures of people and endeavour to take a picture of as many people in the city as i could...seems huge...but only as big as tme allows....i would then post all these people in a public forum...you can come and look at your community...even buy a picture of yourself...someone else (with all funds going to the charity of your choice)- thus bringing us a little closer together.

as for the amazing person...i took some snap shots of people waiting at airports as i travelled...deep thought...musing and in particular the two young fella's looking pretty cool with there guitars and face masks passing through bangkok

A comment on Conversation: Does sharing ideas change minds?

Apr 7 2011: Hey scott fellow kiwi - lots of questions in here - social networking i think certainly shares ideas...does it change minds?, not so sure - i do wonder if it overloads them and makes it all a bit grey - look at all the wonderful work that is and could be done to enhance our environments.. .the energy that can go into this moves with what is happening in the news at the time, the budget to push and how many people are throwing something at a whaling boat (that actually makes the news).

i think people are willing to change minds without rigorous experience, dare i say it look at religion.....based on what experience do people suddenly join a religion....change beliefs or for that matter start beliefs, generally this change is brought on by a need of belonging and the basic lack of knowing what to do so its easier to be led ??

i think that minds can change through the sharing of ideas...but the idea generally has to have something that will "effect me" pretty quickly and if someone else could get it started that would be good to as i need to meet a friend for a coffee.

Does speed help...hmmm? I think again it makes it grey..."oh thats a good idea...i say to a friend who instantly tells me of one they saw on ted,...you tube..facebook....i think the speed and amount shared makes a lot of people aware and gives them the ability to speak of change rather than being the change...phew...i need to breath.

A comment on Conversation: How can creativity and chronic depression coexist?

Apr 5 2011: Hey mary, good question eh...i live and coexist with depression...brought on by the loss of 4 very close people to me about 5 years ago , i lead 60 staff in an innovative company, am married, two kids..house...cat...lawns to mow. i to feel my absolute best when either laughing or creating.. i have dabbled in stone carving, drawing and now really enjoy photography. The down times can be tough...i do have less and less of them as i understand that its ok to be down...in fact quite normal, the trick is to tell the difference between every day flatness and depression, most of the time i can tell myself...for the other times i have a wonderful wife and friends who will always be there. As for patterns too much coffee (certainly dont drink anymore)...doing to much for others (outside of family) and neglecting myself leave me flat......i think we are all different though.

A comment on Conversation: What does it mean to be authentic?

Feb 23 2011: Great question alison...not long ago I was asked by one of my staff why I seemed to be so happy all the time...my immediate response was that my job allows me to be who I am. they looked at me oddly and walked away. Like blink and moments of truth...I didnt stop to think about my response it just felt honest and authentic - a state of being perhaps
  • A reply on Conversation: should i be blaming nature, genetics or nurture for a family of bad hearts?

Feb 18 2011: You have implied well...that does seem a shame...I guess question also was how did it become a genetic issue? a bit like a lot of the big things challenging our planet, much harder to undo than they are to create
  • A reply on Conversation: What was the most amazing social experience you had and why?

Feb 18 2011: great experience for sure...i share it all the time....should have linked it to "have lunch with a stranger"
  • A reply on Conversation: should i be blaming nature, genetics or nurture for a family of bad hearts?

Feb 18 2011: I agree, the question is wider than self as i dont actually blame the past for now, but many many people do - question is though this genetic disposition...isnt it caused by nurture that at some stage caused a genetic change?...therefore if we act now and drive a change in nuture genetics may infact take care of themselves....lets not just add medicine to the issue?
  • A comment on Conversation: should we lose our ego or just become part of a collective ego?

Feb 17 2011: Interesting question Raheel, I see our ego's as being dark and creative. They are dark if led by self for self, about self - if my ego can be used to drive change, innovation and improve is this perhaps a creative ego. If i choose to put my ego into a collective then am i now part of a religion or political party that has a collective ego that is shaped by its members but mainly manipulated by the leaders "head ego". Now some will say that there a lots of very good organisations doing a lot of good work all around the world...adding my ego to this may then be good....even though these organisations will still have a "head ego" ?
  • A comment on Conversation: What was the most amazing social experience you had and why?

Feb 17 2011: When i lived in christchurch about 10 years ago,i was lucky enough to live on a bus route and utlilised the bus to go to and from work each day. the bus journey was always interesting for different reasons, many different people jumping on and off, some engaging, some shy and others with little respect for others. I enjoy watching people and the bus is a great vehicle for this (so to speak). For a few weeks in a row i would get off the bus at the same time that another person would be getting off a different bus and heading off for the day. Each day we would pass each other walking in different directions, each day we wouldnt make eye contact and each day i felt pity for him whilst enjoying what i thought was non contact. Why pity...this man was quite over weight, he walked heavy and looked uncomfortable, I was very quick to judge and perceive that life was tough for this man....quite wrongly i am sure. Each day we would avoid eye contact....men dont make eye contact anyway do they? So why was i enjoying this non contact, well he smelt great....yep my perception of this man was in turmoil with my sense of smell. This non interaction went on for weeks, each day getting off the bus, walking passed each other, our heads slightly lowered, he walking by and me strangly taking a smell of him. one day i plucked up the courage to stop him and ask " hey can i ask what your cologne is?" He quite politely replied...oh its joop for men, do you like it...yes i said...followed by thanks and kept walking. Every day after that we said a quick "morning" made eye contact and we both seemed to be walking with purpose. The next day after we actually made verbal contact i went out and brought a bottle of Joop and have been wearing it everyday since...and with the same resulting questions from both men and women of to its label - Thank you stranger
