Up until the end of 2009 I had been a fast-track entrepreneur with a portfolio of successful businesses. That was the year I woke up with seven brain tumors fighting with my brain for space.
Before that, I produced documentaries and published two books with McGraw Hill. I ran DraftDigital and helped launch the Los Angeles Time’s website. I even ran my own digital branding and communications firm. But then it all came to a crashing halt, as will happen when your head is filled with tumors ranging in size from a small pea to a large tangerine.
To the best of the doctor’s knowledge they were probably the result of a number of factors - stress, diet, a 24/7 workaholic lifestyle. it was literally killing me. So I let my staff go, released my clients from their contracts and closed my business. I also closed my life and awoke to a new one.
After a ten hour operation I spent the next four months watching as my brain rebooted itself. I also learned about the confluence that was taking place between Western science and Eastern philosophies. I learned firsthand how the brain was wired and more important how it could be reprogrammed through such tools as meditation and mindful living.
With a pending surgery to remove one tumor that remained, I changed my life. I started meditating again, I reconnected with yoga. I changed my diet and habits. Most important I created a program to break my old programming I call The Simple Truth.
One year after my surgery I returned to my doctor’s office to discuss the final tumor. I viewed the new MRI of my head and was as stunned as my surgeon when he saw the new image. “That last tumor. It stopped growing,†was all that my doctor said. “I don’t know what you’ve been doing, but it’s working.â€Â
The remaining tumor is a lasting reminder of my prior life. It is a part of my own Simple Truth.
Today I meditate every morning, my diet is one step away from vegan, and yoga now plays a primary part in my life. I also completed a book called The Simple Truth.
In the end my life is richer, healthier and more vibrant as a result of my experience. Now I want to pass that knowledge on to those around me. My book, The Simple Truth, is my way of doing that.
The intersection of Neuroscience and Meditation. Updating Eastern Philosophies for the modern world. Bringing meditation and mindfulness into the 21st Century.
Our bodies were hard wired 40,000 years ago. While we have not changed much, the world has. Many of today's problems are due to our trying to manage the a 21st Century world we live in with the neolithic body and wiring we inherited. The simple truth builds upon meditation and mindfulness practices to over-tide your system, and enjoy the world we created. Some call it "meditation and mindfulness for the modern world."
