About Me

My current work is focused on village reconstruction and economic recovery in areas of Pakistan damaged by floods this last summer. See http://www.pakrenewal.com

I am founder and CEO of Indigo Development, the first consulting firm to put industrial ecology into practice in regional sustainable development, beginning in 1993. I have played a central role in creating the concept of eco-industrial parks (EIP) as a model for local and regional economic development.

I am author of the Eco-Industrial Handbook for Asian Developing Countries, prepared for the Environment Department of Asian Development Bank, an update of the Eco-Industrial Park Handbook which I co-authored for US Environmental Protection Agency in 1994-5. (www.indigodev.com/Handbook.html ) China has made EIPs a key strategy in its circular economy planning with my support.

I also apply industrial ecology to design of the transition to sustainable farming, new town planning, climate adaptation, and integrative regional action planning.

I have been strategic planning consultant for eco-industrial programs in China, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Thailand, the Philippines, South Korea, North Korea, and Vietnam. In the US I have consulted on projects in California, New York, Puerto Rico, Texas, Wisconsin, Maryland, and West Virginia.

I am a poet http://www.indigodev.com/poetryernestlowe.html

and a photographer http://www.takestockphotos.com/imagepages/folioframes.php?FolioID=9

In earlier decades I was a producer at KPFA-FM, Pacific Radio in Berkeley
and at KQED-TV, Public TV in San Francisco.

Grace and I have been married for 54 years and our daughter Martha is a restoration ecologist and rescuer of German Shepherds, including two tripod Shepherds.
