More About Me

I'm passionate about

People and their potential and how actions we do can change us and our environment to be better.

An idea worth spreading

The school is us, and it's not distant. Learning does not have to be slow, or stressful, or difficult. Some people learned to learn in slow motion. Some struggle to learn as they are reactive to environmental social pressure. And we accept these frameworks for learning but not all these are the best to study. The reality in schools, in public schools such as Brazil, is so sad. Kids not engaged, poor professors. And a lot of the existing frameworks are biased to support existing systems in first place, the system keeps moving and no one wants to change it. Instead a full revisit the frameworks of learning, is it possible to insert something on the side? To hack the system a bit? is it possible to use the social web? To bring a student from another country to a class in Brazil? To make a wall that can show what is going on ? A new awareness? Can we capture the data of a class without exactly filming kids? Can we simply engage new systems to change this reality?

Talk to me about

Use of web technologies to help people.

People don't know that I'm good at

Improvising.

My TED Story

I found TED about one year ago. While I have head before I never had access it prior to one year ago. But then, and because I was late in the game, I found a repository with a huge amount of talks that already changed my life. I watched 120 talks so far and it is helping a lot to drive the future of my kiosk project.

    May 5 2011: Videos in Open-based Formats
    ---
We need to get the videos in open-based open video formats, such as the OGV and webm. By doing this, along with a subtitles API, TED will be able to reach out to an interesting number of web developers, specially folks working with open web initiatives -- means to everyone to access video and interactive content without software stack that depends on patents etc.

Embed Videos with Opt-in to Specific Subtitle
    ---
Another thing, also in video, is for the embed to have subtitles. This, by itself, will put TED embedded content in a whole new scale. A lot of international folks are crazy to embed in their languages, they can't right now. You can only embed and ask your end-users to use the subtitle -- a lot of users can simply drop. The beautiful thing about that is that if you go Play-Sit-Relax and wait for 3 minutes, then you can be fully engaged. Without the auto-subtitle setting ( at least the opt-in feature to that ) a lot of folks may drop in 0 to 15 seconds of a talk. Another reason to have this feature is because a lot of the talks are incredibly accessible and inspirational. We cannot affort to have users to go through hassle of understanding subtitle selection ( think a TED talks, embed style, being played 24x7 in a waiting room of a physical location ).

    More accessible Subtitle API
    ---
Define better API and license to subtitles, encourage people to use it.

    Labs
    ---
A Labs channel for new experimentation about videos and web interactivity.

Alerts for contributors, perhaps to end-users
    --
It's totally difficult to help translation due to too many people helping. I had to come up with a solution to monitor the page and let me know when the TED page ( available translations ) has changed. Think about many type of alerts TED crowds can get. I feel this line may lead to other interesting things -- monitoring trends impact and driving things to action.
  • A comment on Conversation: Rethink the human-centered airline experience. *A TEDActive Travel Project*

Apr 18 2011: I think the laptop WIFI experience can be much better. While I think most airplanes don't make sense to use the laptop, due to the space in the economy class, now with the current generation of pads, a reasonable WIFI experience can be explored. I am not talking about Internet/Web access exactly, but the fact a local network can put the folks in the cabin to enjoy new experiences, perhaps some level of socialization too. Image you log in the local network = THISAIRPLANE and then you have a few games and you won't even be able to know which person is playing with you, or perhaps you would.

At least I think would be interesting to try out some experiments, for example, to allow the local participants to vote about the movies, to query/check the movies, to listen to music directly from their pads, to annotate things in the social, to order products or ask crew information, to follow the cabin data, and more.

Feb 24 2011: I am creator of a not yet known project that is a display system that uses web technology -- it's meant to be used in public and semi-public spaces such as a community. A lot of people say that this project is called Digital Signage. But I always felt that "Digital Signage" view was biased towards the world of panels being used for propaganda or very controlled panels such as communication in airports.

Now I am using a lot of energy to point out that this is not digital signage. And that the use of panels in public and semi-public spaces, whe it uses the social function, should not be called digital signage. And it is a difficult endeavor -- it's important to press the same note again and again, but also I had great problems because of the communication and the early use cases of the system. To say in Benjamin Zander's words, these impulses. The notes ( of communication ) needs to show a story that sticks and to allow people to digest. That is where the connection with TED happens:

TED is helping me to explain this project in new ways that creates a great connection with life. And by using TED talks as references, I can also help people to understand the scope of certain ideas -- how these ideas connects with works and existing projects from others. When I created the project before knowing TED, it was pretty much my technological view with a feeling and touch of a general direction, a good direction. But then I know I was failing to tell the story and how it relates to our life. Now, after passing this TED portal, I am able to explain to the world that we can insert social panels in walls everywhere. And that we can make our community space a better place to live with less control of however wants to manipulate others. A system that is not centralized but distributed. A catalyst system that values ideas an actions from locals, where we can share art, love, and inspiration; and not by selecting a few but embracing however wants to learn.

Feb 24 2011: In earlier comment I covered exactly 2000 characters ( allowance in this post ) to pass the first part, the inspiration. I realize this thread is searching for action. I wanted to point out the first actions from my side. I am creator of a not yet known project that is a display system that uses web technology -- it's meant to be for public and semi-public spaces such as a commuity. A lot of people say that this project is called Digital Signage. But I always felt that "Digital Signage" view was biased towards the world of panels being used for propaganda.

The notes ( or communication and cases of uses ) needs to show a story that sticks and people can digest. That is where the connection with TED is helping:

TED is helping me to explain this project better. When I created the project before knowing TED I had a technological view -- I knew the general direction but failed to tell the story that relates to life. Now, after TED, I am able to explain to the world that we can insert social panels in walls everywhere to make the world a better place to live -- these are not to be ad/corporation/broadcast controlled. This is to be made by locals, to share art, to share love, to share inspiration. In a way, like TED does online, but to do that in physical locations.

I also seen many projects displayed at TED talking about that. A lot more mature projects and things that scaled already -- like the hole in the wall, and also social robots made by MIT. Also the lovely robot from the lovely MarylinMonrobot can be used in social spaces to educate people.

Feb 24 2011: I had a chance to feel TED impact in a way a bit different than others. Friends and family sent me the links to the site and I always ignored. Not being superior to TED just ignoring because I had no idea and I was not expecting links to feed my life in new exciting ways. Then somehow, one day I started watching. The interesting thing is that because I am late in the game, I had a lot of amazing talks. The fact that I started watching top talks in a row created effects I was not aware I would have at this point. As Sugata Mitra said in his talk "this sent shivers on my spine ". I had that a lot.

It's now about 90 talks I watched in a period of a few months I can say. The thing is that TED is covering a lot of topics using the inspirational function and this changes everything. It's funny and sometimes it's also weird, it's like one of the speakers said in a talk that what you see can be true, and yet the opposite can also be true. Which also aligns with the talk that says that things are up site down -- the evolutionary function. TED is making me change something, and this could be bad or good to my life -- I don't know yet. The thing is that we sometimes have to live in this weird world, and it's not for everyone to jump outside of it. TED gave me a light and yet a sort of sadness but I know the outcome is a good energy. I am 36 years old today and after about 90 TED talks I can say tht things are connecting to a point I will coordinate action. We all know what we have to do but we never do -- TED talks are catalysts to action. Thank you my friends. Obrigado

  • A comment on Conversation: Test Schools, Not Children

Feb 17 2011: I think a related thread is home teaching. It's interesting to keep the annotations about all the legal cases of states against families and vice-versa. When families are doing ( or at least trying ) to do a good or better job than government to teach their kids. Here is a recent Brazilian article [1] on a family that was sued by the Brazilian government. In Brazil things are even worse than some places because our law is general and applies to the whole country. So because schools are poor is no way to scape unless you leave the country, so far.
