An idea worth spreading

In 1945, when Korea divided into North and South, South Korea was the poorer of the two. Now, the average income of the South Korean worker is 15 times that of its North Korean counterpart.

One in three North Korean children under the age of 5 are malnourished.

One in four North Koreans need food aid. Only one in seventeen will receive it, because people are reluctant about giving aid, especially with North Korea's international reputation.

If someone in a North Korean family defects or is deemed with treason, up to three generations of his or her family may be subject to punishment.

Once, the extended North Korean family members of a South Korean family finally met after decades of not seeing each other. Both sides wept at the reunion, but one side gave thanks to God, while the other thanked the Dear Leader.

Despite the impoverished and poor living conditions of the general public, North Korea was once the biggest consumer of Hennessy.

My TED story

My first TED talk was Hans Rosling's "Best Stats" in a geography class. A close friend of mine then told me about TED Talks, and I could not stop coming back to watch more videos. All of them gave me something to learn, laugh, think and be amazed about. More recently, after browsing the site beyond the videos, I've really come to respect and love what TED stands for and what it aspires to change. I believe a lot of it aligns with what I would like to be involved in. I look forward to enjoying more videos, helping with translations and doing what I can.
