Nov 19 2011: Two for me, one who got me to think of how vast our universe is and opened my creative mind. The other who taught me how hard work can pay off for good in the long term. Im afraid that I found many of the teachers in my secondary school hostile, and disinterested in inspiring their pupils
Nov 19 2011: Broadly agree Jeronique yes, essentially the point I was making is that I don't expect the school to cover 100% of my childs education. In other matters I had a coversation with an educator at one of our leading public (US private) schools today. He told me that being able to play or converse about rugby and knowing classic English literature such as 'Just William' were seen as positives
Nov 19 2011: It always amazes me how little mainstream western society realises this influence, from the clothes we wear and how we wear it to fragrances to the post disco/garage/house/dance music we hear to the designs of our furniture. Don't worry Noel, I as a straight man will try and educate others on this knowledge!
Nov 18 2011: I am a parent and although my son is young I am certain that my wife and I will teach all what you mention, I actually see manners as a strength not weakness. A good example are leaders such as PM David Cameron who came from a very affluent upper class background, but utterly charming and able to engage with a wide variety of people. I really do think that one can be utterly well mannered without being 'soft'.
Nov 18 2011: Perhaps by allowing people to acknowledge the HUGE contributions gay people have made to the arts, design, music, caring professions and a whole heap of other fields instead of talking up bedroom exploits. In yesterdays edition of the London Evening Standards an 80 year old respected art critic spoke of his 1000 lovers, why? what is the relevance? this critic (Brian Sewell) has lead an interesting life and has been a British establishment figure for decades im certain he has many other more interesting stories than talking about his private life.
Nov 16 2011: I like your point although I do not know what context you refer to with the word catalyst.
I have a child of 7 months I don’t expect the educator to take sole responsibility for my childs education as like you say the responsibility lies in the environment that he lives. Although I am certain that in time my son will develop his own likes/dislikes but in the meantime I have taken him to the London Science museum, art galleries and music venues as these are my wifes and I likes. Yes like any good parent I want happiness and success in life for my son, and there are lots of subjects I and my wife cannot teach him as we are not experienced enough that is where schooling comes in. however let me give you an example of how I can teach my child, I have heard many parents say how ‘black history should be taught in schools. The reason some will say this is because they believe it may raise self esteem and boost exam results. Now in my opinion I would not want a school teaching my son any ‘black history’ why? Because I am confident that most schools would not do a better job than my family or I in teaching him many facets of history.
im more interested in him being taught the national curriculum rigorously so that he can stand a chance in our globalised worlrd.
Nov 14 2011: Yes of course it seems a nonsense that someone with a previous conviction cannot vote. The House of Lords is the upper house of the UK parliament, these hereditary Lords and Ladies apparently cannot be stripped of their titles unless they commit treason. Lord Taylor of Warwick and Baron Archer of Weston-super-Mare, a life peer can still sit in the House of LordsPM David Cameron is on record saying that 'everyone' deserves a 2nd chance
Nov 14 2011: I was in Greensboro NC with my mum a few years ago and I found that lots of people spoke to us, especially when they heard the accent. I did find in my travels in the US that people are generally more talkative than the UK and probably the rest of Europe
