My TED Story

I stumbled onto TED while preparing my MBA Final Thesis. I was writing a chapter on plain language, and Google brought me to Alan Siegel's talk. I translated it into Dutch, just to get a feeling of how the translation dynamics worked. I liked it so much that I decided to try to 'make a small contribution' by becoming a TED Translator. Since I'm a true philologist (word-lover), this is in fact just fun to me. In the process, I have come across zillions of interesting ideas, and interesting people.

  • A reply on Talk: Simon Lewis: Don't take consciousness for granted

    Aug 18 2011: Hello Simon,
I was working on the Dutch translation of your talk and I wondered whether this number was correct. With only 1440 minutes in a 24 hour day, 3300 would be an amazing average indeed. I'll ask for the transcript to be corrected, and I'll refer to your comment here.

Thank you for your very interesting talk,

A reply on Conversation: Let's save our inboxes by adopting this Email Charter!

Jul 25 2011: I understand and share your concern for privacy, Stephanie. Still, I can see why this is not part of the charter: sending a mail to a whole lot of people in bcc may protect their privacy, but it's still spamming. I don't think it an idea worth spreading ;-).
  • A reply on Conversation: Let's save our inboxes by adopting this Email Charter!

    Jul 24 2011: Hello Stephanie,

Could you be a little more specific on what you mean 'proper use of bcc'? Personally, I try to avoid it because it is intransparent. To me, using bcc is a sign of lack of trust in and transparency towards the other adressees.
  • A comment on Conversation: Start an independent subtitling translation best practice sharing platform for TEDxTalks

    Jul 13 2011: Hello Krystian,

    Good initiative!
In order to attract more attention to this conversation, you might consider replacing "OTP" with "translation" in your question, since not everyone is familiar with the abbreviation.

    All the best,

    Els
  • A comment on Conversation: PALM OIL!

    Jul 13 2011: Hello Muhammad,

"PALM OIL!" is not really a question to the TED community. Even "is there more steps that we can take to save the environment" is still quite vague. There's plenty of environmental topics at hand already, so the answer to the latter is "yes" ;-). But to start an ineteresting conversation, you'd better be more specific.

A reply on Conversation: Translating the whole TED website.

    Jul 11 2011: Hello Ana,

You are not the only one thinking along these lines! This remark has been made repeatedly in the past. I believe TED is giving it serious thoughts. Things are moving already, and the translation of the website will come eventually. However, it is a project that will take some time. In the meantime, enjoy the translation work!

    Best regards,

    Els
