I believe the conversation on this is bigger than The Koran or Muslims and Christians...
I am the Executive Director for Character Counts! in Jacksonville. I work to educate my community on character and ethics. As I move from circle to circle of organizations, groups, churches, what I experience is the fear of being affected/changed/moved.
We as humans get an idea in our heads, we hold onto it for dear life. We work to expand it, inform it and validate it. We then work to get others to buy into it, so we are not alone with the idea. We want other people to think the way we think. To create community, to create support, safety...we seek connection and the way to do that is shared thinking.
Even this community here at TED, we are seeking connection and inspiration. We come together in mutual respect and see the power of affective communication. We open ourselves to new ideas and allow ourselves to be grown. That is why TED is such a cultural force.
TED has created a space of mutual respect and hence it opens our egos to be willing to be affected. We learn and grow together and those two experiences create deep and meaningful bonds in our lives. I look forward to seeing more of your posts...

A comment on Conversation: What happens to chivalry once women are "equal" to men?
So what is the word when a woman does it? Why is extreme politeness a man thing??? Hmm interesting...
Funny thing is, I shall often comment to a man, who has held a door or done a small gesture of politeness, That I am glad to see that Chivalry is not dead! I honor and delight when I see a man treat a woman as a woman. Kind simple gestures of civility have been lost. As we understand the power of a simple extra effort, we become more connected and in tune to ourselves and others.
Thanks for the question it is a good one!!
