  • A comment on Conversation: What is for you the SPIRIT of ENTREPRENEURSHIP??

Feb 15 2011: Not to be an entrepreneur is to admit that I do not know what to do with my life, to accept to be told when I can sleep, when I can eat, and what I should do with most of my waking hours. Give me someone else’s ideas to adopt and to defend. Take my time and my freedom in exchange for my daily bread.

To be an entrepreneur is everything else.
  • A comment on Conversation: Should anyone be able to upload their TEDTalk to TED.com?

Feb 15 2011: Chris, only TEDxTalks that are endorsed by a sufficient number of TED members should be featured on TED.com, to preserve a quality that would be lost if the platform is open.

YouTube already functions, to some degree, as a first stage filtering device, but who has the time to go digging in for hidden gems?

Why not select someone on your team to extract from YouTube, each week, the most popular 10-15 videos, include them in a candidates list, make them available to TED members, for voting, via a dedicated section of TED.com that is only open to registered users. Allow us to vote up and down, and feature the highest placed video. Each week, drop the lowest ranked half of the candidates list and replace it with fresh blood from the YouTube channel.
  • A comment on Talk: Bill Gates on energy: Innovating to zero!

Feb 19 2010: What are the plants that consume the highest amount of CO2 per square meter of space needed to grow it? How many square meters of such plants would be needed to neutralize the excess CO2 currently emitted by human activity? Would such an area fit on Earth? May sound silly, but until we learn how to dramatically reduce the output of CO2, could we put at least more of the excess to good use?
  • A comment on Talk: VS Ramachandran: The neurons that shaped civilization

Jan 5 2010: Are mirror neurons activated strictly by sight? Does the witnessed action have to be something physical? I wonder if similar neurons exist for that which is not visible to the eye, and if the ability to fire them is the key to human compassion...

To mirror some of the ideas above - can we see more from this gentleman? I understand the materials posted on TED are strictly linked to talks given at TED events. What if a few selected speakers would be given the opportunity to use TED.com as a platform to share their ideas and post videos that were produced outside of a TED event, yet targeted to and for the benefit of a TED audience?
  • A comment on Talk: Shaffi Mather: A new way to fight corruption

Dec 28 2009: Such a service has the potential to legitimize bribery instead of eliminating it. Even in a best case scenario, the victim still pays for something that should have been received free of charge. Meanwhile, strong incentives are created for service providers to collaborate behind the scenes with the corrupt officials. It would be worth reducing the overall price tag to create the illusion of a transaction that is legitimate, and as such, beyond lawful prosecution. In a legitimate business, what is lost in rate can be made up in increased volume, right? Would you still buy a medicine that reduces painful symptoms if you knew the side effect intensifies the very cause of the disease?

That being said, there is value in any idea that challenges the assumption that fighting crime falls exclusively under the jurisdiction of public institutions. Furthermore, if the service would consist of an educational program that puts the corruption fighting tools in the hands of those who need them...
