Eric Whitacre: Virtual Choir Live
Jason, the technology we have available is *extremely* limited at this point. It was a stressful experience (I was one of the Skype singers on the monitor). We kept losing connection during rehearsal, and I feared that I'd get out of rhythm if I couldn't see Eric. There is much more flexibility and control in the all-virtual choirs (VC4 is just about to come out). These are all done in-studio with a lot of adjustments both in audio and video. You can still hear imperfect pronunciations, different timings, but it works beautifully. This was an attempt — and in my mind successful though far from perfect — to show a simultaneous performance by people from around the world. People are already using Skype to practice together across distances, and here Eric wanted to elevate this to the concert level. There was a 1-2-second time lapse, so yes, this was a VERY courageous attempt that could have gone horribly wrong if the connection was one degree less stable than it already was. This is simply the best technology in the world so far, and we're definitely looking forward to it getting better. Thanks for your constructive feedback!

Eric Whitacre: Virtual Choir Live
Dear Jacquelyne, thank you so much for your kind words. I was in the Live Virtual Choir and I'm so moved to hear we made a difference for you. Eric's music has helped me so much through the years, especially with grief. Especially his "When David Heard" is profoundly moving and is about loss. http://www.amazon.com/Water-Night-Eric-Whitacre/dp/B007MXMU9C/ref=sr_1_1_digr?ie=UTF8&qid=1364132628&sr=8-1 My heart goes out to you in your grief... I can't even fathom losing my mother. Sending love & healing to you from NYC. Join us for Virtual Choir 4 if you'd like, we'd love to have you.

Eric Whitacre: Virtual Choir Live
Thanks, Donald — I was in the Live Virtual Choir and that was exactly the constraint we had to work with. Much of the time we couldn't hear the feed from TED, it was actually extremely risky technologically even to attempt this.

Brad, 2 quick things: — If you've ever been on a Skype call you know that sound quality is nothing like pure stage sound. So no conductor would want a bunch of Skype calls as loud as live singers…. Not with the technology we have in 2013 anyway ;-) Maybe soon! — The Skype lapse is approximately a second. But as you probably know, even a quarter of a second can make a big difference in musical timing. So your scenario of a marvelously coordinated conductor who could conduct real-time and a second early at the same without giving themselves a stroke — and this sounding good on Skype — is quite impossible right now!!! :) Even if he was a second early, 3/4 of the singers would still be off. So I say we call this one good and just enjoy the piece in its lovely worldwide imperfection... It's as perfect as it can get in 2013. Amazing how talking about a time lapse can make us feel so actually together with people from around the world... And in perspective, it makes me so grateful for the technology we do have — a second of a delay in speaking from someone on the other side of the globe, and us having a lovely bonding moment together... I don't mind ;-)

Dan Pallotta: The way we think about charity is dead wrong
Mr Pallotta, I love how you explain the apologizing for itself bit, and I'm really feeling the Calvinist stuff. As a foreigner here in the States, along with many if not all my foreign friends, we are aghast that in this country the most religious people offer the least help socially for the poor. There are definitely religious notions and archetypes here and a very unhealthy overall view of profit, income, material blessings etc. And the self-hatred is of course at the base of it. Thanks for shedding a light.
