More About Me

I'm passionate about

Using TED Talks in the classroom, mentoring young people, and telling stories

An idea worth spreading

Daniel Pink says "Mastery is getting better and better at something that matters." What matters most to you?

Talk to me about

Teaching to Inspire, Being a Rookie at Anything, Aspiring to be a parent this year, Single-tasking and being fully present

My TED Story

When I met Chris Anderson at TEDActive in Palm Springs I was so inspired that I coined the phrase TEDucator: those who develop and use TED Talks in the classroom. I'm in the process of proposing a way to create, index, and share lesson plans that teachers can use in the classroom at all levels.

A reply on Talk: JD Schramm: Break the silence for suicide attempt survivors

Dec 11 2011: John, the important thing is what you're doing...asking for help! Whether it's from a stranger (like phoning the Suicide Prevention Help Line) or from somebody close to you (a friend or family member) the important thing is to voice what's up to somebody you trust where you know it's safe. If you'd like to chat individually feel free to email me at jschramm@stanford.edu and we can arrange a time to chat or begin to email in more privacy than this forum might allow.

Hang in there...you're not alone! JD

Aug 31 2011: Thanks Jean. You are precisely right in how I was understanding the stats. Whether they are accurate I cannot say; but the fact that few resources exist to help people who've attempted once and are trying to regain their lives has been my experience.

Aug 31 2011: Thanks David. It was a risk to do, but one that I feel was worth taking.

Aug 3 2011: It's an interestting idea. I've gotten lots of emails from people who have sought out different types of services. Larger cities, obviously, have more. But I like this dspecific idea and will share it with others who are working in this field. Best, JD

Jun 16 2011: Hello All on this string,

I've read and reread the comments on this page and I'm humbled by the vast amount of dialogue my talk has generated. That's exactly what I wanted...people sharing about a subject we too often avoid. It's clear we don't all agree, but at least we've broken the silence. I'm trying to reply individually to folks but it's hard to get to everybody, and feel like my comments and replies are still relevant for a post left a few days ago. Nonetheless...keep the conversation going; wether here or elsewhere, the world needs to have this conversation. Thanks! JD

Jun 14 2011: Chip, thanks for your comment and for paving the way with your own vulnerable talk at TEDx Berkeley. The more we share the secrets which scare us to share...the easier it becomes. You inspire so many in your work and your writings, Chip. Thanks. JD

    Jun 14 2011: Hello Christina,

Thanks for joining this conversation. I wrote the speech so that I could choose if I would divulge or not that the story was my own. I trusted my instinct in that moment to go further and share the full story. Then I had to decide whether to let the video go up online, but from the volume of emails, tweets, and posts...I am glad I did.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. It hurts when we lose people we love. I'm glad you are sharing with others, that's the best way I think, to honor the ones we love and come to terms with our loss. JD

Jun 14 2011: Mark (and all the others in this stream)

Thanks for being a part of this important conversation. My story is perhaps more dramatic than most, but it's important we all share the "ups and downs" with people who care. I cannot comment on some of the posts and opinions here...I'm just glad folks are talking (or typing). That takes some of the stigma away. JD
