Dan Pink: The puzzle of motivation
Hi Logan, don't you think that Pink's argument about the problems with economic incentives apply to grades as well. Grades are like the carrots and sticks that he is talking about - they only work with very narrow assignments that involve mechanical, repetitive tasks, but they don't work well for assignments that require creative/critical thinking. Extending Pink's argument to education, I would say that there is a mismatch between what social science knows that what schools do. People in both businesses and schools must change the way they think about motivation... what do you think?
