A reply on Talk: Kiran Bir Sethi teaches kids to take charge

Jan 22 2010: The video does not show "kids blocking the traffic on a busy day" -- the entire event was made with the active participation and coordination of the police and local authorities. As I understood, the kids only ASKED the authorities for the realization of the event -- it's a big difference.

Back to Srinath's argument, no one said the kids are "taking charge" without adult supervision. If they are, then you're right, it's a dangerous thing - but the video does not show this.

It's ok to be skeptical about a program like this, but don't let your fears and concerns lead you to misguided conclusions.

A reply on Talk: Kiran Bir Sethi teaches kids to take charge

Jan 21 2010: There is a right time for everything. Don't try to accellerate the river - it will flow by itself!

Educator's worst error is to focus on intellectual development as the most important, if not the unique, thing to be taught.

Children are not ready for full intellectual manipulations as adults do. Although they can speak and understand and learn, their minds are still maturing. We need to be patient on this process.

In order to be ready to develop advanced intellectual skills, when adults or adolescents, children need to develop other skills, like self-confidence, leadership, socialization, cooperation, coordination... That's the whole idea of this talk.

Self-confidence and action come first. Conventional wisdom and thinking come later.
