  • A comment on Talk: Robin Chase on Zipcar and her next big idea

Aug 30 2009: Wireless networks and global taxation schemes lobbied for in Washington are a hard sell, but the social gains from sharing aren't as much. I notice with Velib in Paris that communal bicycles moderately increase civility and neighborliness (though there's also the huge issue of vandalism). They do so even without having been thought through as a social innovation. People are often more disinterested than you would think. You just can't hit them over the head with it. Perhaps the wireless network based on cars would have wider appeal if it was sold as a friendly, decentralized way to interact with fellow drivers. I guess CB radio had this kind of lateral, citizen, non-governmental appeal to it.
