Atticus Deckard Posted over 1 year ago Andrew Solomon: Depression, the secret we share It isn't purely a chemical problem OR a psychological problem that can be addressed purely with chemical or philosophical (i.e. rational) solutions. It is a spiritual problem. I do not use that term to mean anything specifically metaphysical. I use it to mean the "hard problem of consciousness" that science is currently unable to explain. The solution for the people capable of using them responsibly (rarely and in the proper context) and handling them effectively (being able to separate realities and not descend into psychosis)? Hallucinogens. The kind of life-changing inner peace and contentment thrust upon people by things like LSD, psilocybin, and ayahuasca held the keen interest of many a Harvard psychologist until the government, in all its authoritarian fear and insecurity, cut off virtually all useful scientific inquiry into the area. The heavy burden of the Ego can only truly be relieved by rediscovering the real, terrifying truth about the Self: that I am. I am, and nothing more. As Feynman said so simply: "I, a universe of atoms, an atom in the universe." You are a beautiful, unique, intricate machine made out of ancient stardust . . . but so is everyone else! And just like everyone else, to the dust you will return. And that is okay. I promise. Happy New Year! Here we all go around the Sun again!
