New Jersey Residential Developmental Centers. This place is better described as the 'Island of Misfit Humans', and the residents, or wards of the state, that live there are treated that way. After spending only three months as a physical therapy intern at one of these developmental centers, I was appalled at how the residents were treated by their direct care staff. I will go as far to say they were neglectful, abusive, and inhumane. America is moving away from campus-like residential centers and shifting more towards smaller group homes, but group homes has issues of their own. I believe there is a lot of opportunity for residential developmental centers to become a privately owned business. Currently all New Jersey Residential Developmental Centers are government-run facilities with state of NJ employees, and I think we can all imagine how inefficient such a facility is. A privately owned developmental center can give the proper care needed by people who care.
