Science is developing the tools towards de-extinction of species on the planet that have become extinct. The question becomes; Should we?
It's going to be a tough road to hoe with reintroduction of passenger pigeons back into the wild, assuming de-extinction works. At best, they will be captive in zoos and museums for years. The extinction clock was ticking for the last wild birds around 1890 because of their low numbers. And in captivity they did not produce offspring.

William Kamkwamba: How I harnessed the wind
Here is an interesting analogy ... I need a bookcase so I buy a bookcase kit at Ikea. I take home a bulky box with all the wood pieces, screws, bolts and assembly instructions. MAYBE I can arrange and assemble the bookcase. I usually can do this, not due to my intelligence, but due to perseverance and avoiding mistakes. William fabricated the windmill and all the other components using scrap materials. There are special people who can build marvelous things from materials that don't look anything like the finished product. I think it's more than intelligence at work with William ... he's a visionary AND a brilliant technician, too. He actually reminds me of my dad and grandfather, both blacksmiths who were also good fabricators. Somehow I can't see William buying a windmill kit at Ikea. If they sold them. - Dave
