My TED Story

After watching Sir Ken Robinson's first TED Talk, I realized there was this whole website full of amazing talks that I had to show my teachers. TED Talks then became a regular part of my teacher trainings. Now my teachers request that we watch TED Talks!

A comment on Talk: Kid President: I think we all need a pep talk

Feb 7 2013: I LOVE this video! I am a teacher and shared it with my colleagues. I found out just how boring they were when I asked several of them if they had taken a look at it. Not one person had taken three minutes to watch it. And we are all special ed teachers-this would be a great pep talk for all of our students, but if the adults in our world won't take the time to pass on a small gem like this....Well, at least TED will pass it on!!

A comment on Conversation: How much of a right do students have to questioning and independent thinking?

Jan 17 2013: I would hope that is the major function of the teacher. To expect their students to question and think independently.
  • A comment on Conversation: what commitments are you prepared to make to continue learning about the topics you found inspiring at TED2012?

Mar 5 2012: I am going to start an after school group for some students and show them some of the talks. I am hoping to spark something in them that pushes them to think outside the box.
  • A comment on Talk: Keith Nolan: Deaf in the military

Feb 14 2012: Just forwarded this talk to our Deaf ED Director and some teachers. Great talk for our AI Students and I hope it shows them you should never give up on a dream.

    Way to go Keith!!

A comment on Conversation: What's your favorite single sentence from a TEDTalk?

Feb 14 2011: "The first boy said 'I bring you gold', and the second boy said 'I bring you myrrh', and the third boy said 'Frank sent this'."

Sir Ken Robinson says Schools Kill Creativity

I show this talk at the beginning of each school year to about 75 teachers to remind us how valuable the creativity of students is and to remember not to squash it as we are trying to deliver our curriculum!
  • A comment on Talk: Jake Shimabukuro plays "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Jan 31 2011: Holy smokin' ukelele!! Awesome.
  • A comment on Talk: Elizabeth Lesser: Take "the Other" to lunch

Jan 24 2011: This talk really got to me as I have a close friend that has gotten into the habit of repeating all the explosive statements/unwarranted claims from one political side knowing that I lean to the other side. This talk helped me remember that I need to listen and try to help her listen to my views as well so we can have a great discussion instead of just volleying insults back and forth.

A comment on Talk: Ali Carr-Chellman: Gaming to re-engage boys in learning

Jan 24 2011: Great discussion for this TEDTalk. The various points brought up will be ones I bring up when showing this to my teachers. I look forward to what comes out of that discussion as our teachers work with youth at drug rehabs and shelters and it will be interesting to see if they have some of the same ideas on educating males.

A comment on Talk: Jamie Oliver's TED Prize wish: Teach every child about food

Nov 10 2010: I went to one of the local shelters in our city yesterday where our school district has two teachers. One of the young ladies had just finished watching Jamie's video. She was excited to talk to me about the video and what she thought of what students eat at school. I was thrilled that this had sparked an interest in her that was motivating enough to want to share with an adult!

A comment on Talk: Stacey Kramer: The best gift I ever survived

Oct 19 2010: A lot of buzz on this talk. For me personally, it made me stop and think about how lucky I am; it reminded me to slow down a little and enjoy the life I am living.
